ECU DL/I Administrator Certificate Program
East Carolina University (ECU)'s DL/I Administrator Certificate Program just wrapped up with their first cohort, and the participants wanted to share a bit about their work on the four courses and what they learned that will help them as a DL/I administrator.

I thought I was a fairly
seasoned DL/I administrator, but this series of classes really helped me
clarify what we do and why we do it. The course work and research revealed
opportunities for growth and challenged my thinking.
- Suzanne Mitchell, Johnston County Schools
I really enjoyed the DL/I
Program provided by ECU. We had excellent instructors who helped us reflect and
learn more about DL/I Programs. I learned so much about socio-cultural
competence and about educational supervision in a DL/I setting. The modules,
group discussions, and instructors' input helped me strengthen my
foundation and knowledge about DL/I Programs and to share what I have learned
in my district.
- Maguy Yancey, Wayne County Schools
The courses were taught by two well-known NC DL/I educators, Emily
Bivens, Principal at Frank Porter Graham Bilingue in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools, and Charles Aiken, Chief Officer for Instruction in Pender County Schools (formerly of Chatham County Schools). Five administrators from across the state, including the two quoted above and Cynthia Bredenberg (Chatham County Schools), Donna Podgorny (Union County Public Schools), and Ivanna M.T. Anderson (NCDPI), were represented in the program which explored these topics as courses: Leading DL/I Programs, Content Area and Language
Instruction in DL/I Programs, Cross-Cultural Competence in DL/I Programs and
Educational Supervision of DL/I Programs.
The cohort
built a network of support that they plan to extend through a new plan for
administrator support/outreach with webinars, school site visits, and a meetup at
NCDLI 2019 in
Charlotte, NC, on February 6-9. More details will be posted on the NCDPI DL/I web
site as they become available.
The second
cohort currently has 7 registrants and room for more. For more information or
to register, visit the ECU DL/I Administrator Certificate website.
Jordan-Matthews High School Graduates First DL/I Cohort
Chatham County Schools began its first DL/I program in 2004-2005 with kindergarteners at Siler City Elementary School. Now, 13 years later, they proudly graduated 16 bilingual, bicultural and
biliterate global citizens! All 16 received the Global Languages
Endorsement, NC’s Seal of Biliteracy, and two of the DL/I graduates, Jonathan Aguilar and Olivia
Gregson, served as co-valedictorians of the Class of 2018, which had 750 students total.
Cynthia
Bredenberg, Spanish Teacher and DL/I Coordinator at Jordan-Matthews High School, shared the following details:
Jonathan
and Olivia have both been in DL/I since kindergarten. They are
exceptional students who were tied to the decimal point for #1 in their
class. Their
backgrounds could not be more different. Jonathan is from a Spanish-speaking home and was born in Mexico. Olivia is from an
English-speaking home and was born in the USA, yet they both had mothers who
put them in the
DL/I program. Being from our first cohort, they are close friends and
have grown
up together. Jonathan is talented musically and had a role in our
musicals the past few years. He has received a full scholarship from
Duke
University and he wants to study medicine. Olivia is a great runner and
participated in cross country all four years. Olivia will be
continuing her education this fall with a full scholarship to UNC-Charlotte.
Their joint
graduation speech
(available by clicking the hyperlink) was offered in Spanish and English. They spoke of their journey in the DL/I program and encouraged others to step
outside their comfort zone and embrace diversity.
Their story has been
shared with state education leaders across the country via the Council of Chief State School
Officers (CCSSO) and Jose Viana, Assistant Deputy Secretary and
Director of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), with the US
Department of Education. It is scheduled to be highlighted in an upcoming America the Bilingual
podcast as an example of the power of dual language/immersion.
