Boosting
Achievement
Workshop with Carol Salva
Carol Salva is an ESL consultant
for Seidlitz Education and the co-author Boosting Achievement: Reaching
Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education. It has sold thousands of
copies in its first year of publication and is receiving positive feedback
from teachers and administrators alike. The book is based on the successes
Carol is having in her classroom in Houston, Texas.
Boosting Achievement is a guide to help educators and school
districts navigate the challenges and learning opportunities unique to SIFE
(Students with Interrupted Formal Education). Circumstances such as upheaval
due to war and political turmoil in their native countries may have contributed
to minimal education experiences, thus prompting current educators to adopt an
innovative approach in meeting students’ cognitive, affective, and linguistic
needs.

NC K-3
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT PROCESS; SUCCESS DURING THE KINDERGARTEN YEAR
Teachers,
instructional coaches, and administrators in North Carolina’s public schools
are sharing how their engagement with the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process
is impacting teaching and learning in classrooms across the state. At East Rockingham Elementary School in
Richmond County, Ashley Britt, a kindergarten teacher, utilizes her grade level
team’s PLC structure to support students’ growth. This story illustrates the importance of
utilizing the Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA) portion of the NC K-3
Formative Assessment Process to make instructional decisions for children.
Ms. Ashley Britt has
three kindergarten students in her classroom who were at similar levels of fine
motor skill development earlier this year.
During PLC meetings, Ms. Britt had the opportunity to share with her
grade level team the observational evidence collected on these students, as
well as how she interpreted the evidence to represent the corresponding skill
levels on the Grip and Manipulation construct progression. The students were using a fisted grip or
using only the tips of their fingers to hold a writing utensil, and one
student’s fisted grip was made with his thumb pointing down towards the writing
surface, thus placing these students at the earliest skill steps along the
progression. Ms. Britt also shared her
plans for supporting the students during authentic instructional activities,
such as those involving writing or coloring, in order to meet the next learning
target on the progression. Through the
collaborative nature of the PLC structure at East Rockingham, Ms. Britt and her
colleagues were able to discuss the needs of the students, and her teammates
contributed various ideas and additional instructional strategies to increase
the children’s developmental progress.
Ms. Britt then adapted her instruction by implementing natural
opportunities to model and assist students in practicing grip and manipulation
techniques. She demonstrated the correct
pencil and crayon grip and guided students through finger placement or the
strategic manner in which they picked up the writing utensil, thus allowing
their fingers to be placed in more of a tripod grip. Addressing these fine motor needs enabled the
students to write with greater automaticity and fluency. Embedding the formative assessment process in
classroom instruction led to greater student achievement as Ms. Britt focused
on whole-child development.

Formative Assessment Process, please visit our wiki or contact your regional K-3 Education Consultant.
