Charter School Application Interviews
The CSAB conducted and completed the interview phase for 2 of 29 applicants proposing to open in 2019-20 on March 5, 2018. The schools appearing before the CSAB and their
recommendations are as follows:
- B.L.U.E. G.R.E.E.N Academy - RECOMMENDED to the SBE
- Revolution Academy - NOT Recommended to the SBE
The SBE will receive the CSAB recommendations for applicants proposing to open in 2019-20 at its April 2018 meeting. The SBE typically discusses the recommendations one month and takes action the following month. Per statute, the SBE has until August 15 to make its final decisions regarding these applicants. Attached below is the approved application
timeline and process which details what happens with each phase of the application
process for schools proposing to open in 2019-20. The Office of Charter Schools
maintains a progress chart on its website to detail decisions made by the CSAB
and State Board of Education.

Reflections from Mr.
Alex Quigley, Chair, Charter Schools Advisory Board (CSAB)
We are so excited to close out this year’s applications and send some strong schools to the State Board of Education in April. Each year we make slight adjustments to our process, refine our selection decisions and improve based on what we have learned.
Every new charter school that our state invests in involves inherent risk. But innovation will never happen without taking risks, trying new things, and approaching persistent challenges in new ways. We believe some of our new applicants will do just that. We also know that steps taken to ensure a rigorous selection process plays a tremendous role in reducing risk and accelerating success.
Over the last 3 years since the CSAB has been leading the application process, we have recommended many schools of which none have closed. Since 2011 charter schools have grown from 100 to approximately 189 beginning the fall of 2018! Should all the schools we have recommended open, we will be over 200 charter schools soon. We are proud of our track record and will continue to do everything in our power to maintain it. We look forward to beginning another application round for applicants to open in 2020-21!
