Home Base Biweekly Update

Nov. 10, 2016

Digital-age tools and resources are transforming education today in ways that benefit both classroom instruction and student learning.

North Carolina has made steady progress in recent years to integrate digital resources into the everyday educational experiences of teachers and students. Our Home Base suite of digital applications has been integral to this process. The state’s 2015 Digital Learning Plan (DLP) provided a clear set of recommendations for North Carolina’s schools. This fall, with funding from the General Assembly, we have launched the Digital Learning Initiative, implementing key components of the plan.

The Department of Public Instruction collaborated with the Friday Institute at NC State University to develop a school-level rubric to facilitate the promise of high quality, digital-age education. This rubric follows one already in place for districts. I encourage you to explore this resource and reflect on how it could help your school move forward with your digital learning efforts.

Rubric Advances Digital Learning

The Friday Institute, in partnership with the Department of Public Instruction, has developed a “Pilot Digital Learning Progress Rubric for Schools” that lays out a detailed, yet digestible, roadmap for schools to transition to high quality digital learning environments.

The rubric provides specific guidance to assist schools in four key areas as they integrate digital learning into teaching and learning: leadership, professional learning, content and instruction, and data and assessment.

Download the Digital Learning Progress Rubric for Schools: HERE (http://ncdlplan.fi.ncsu.edu/rubric/)

The school-level rubric parallels the 2015 district-level rubric (available on the same webpage). The school rubric may be used to inform district strategic planning, school improvement planning, and/or guide informal monthly teacher-team meetings. It also contains a glossary of over 50 digital learning related terms and ideas.

Please note,  the School Level Rubric is a pilot resource and is currently being field-tested. As your schools begin to use this resource, please share your feedback at any time throughout the 2016-17 year with Malinda Faber, Research Associate at the Friday Institute at malinda_faber@ncsu.edu.
