School Psychology Notification - Concussion Policy Information

Below is a review of concussion specific work that has been underway during the past year through the Children & Youth Committee of the NC Brain Injury Advisory Council (in collaboration with NC DPI’s Healthy Schools Section, Specialized Instructional Support Personnel, and School-Based Practice Advisory Council on TBI).

The project on concussion monitoring was organized and implemented across several phases, described below:

Phase 1 -   Recommend education policy to expand concussion monitoring beyond the playing field for all public school students

  • Completed in October 2015 through SBE Policy (HRS-E-001) on concussion management for ALL students (extends beyond Gfeller-Waller/student athletes & playing field)

Phase 2 -   Develop a guide to support implementation of the policy by all public schools across the state of NC

  • Completed in June 2016

Phase 3 -   Develop a parent information brochure for medical professionals to provide to parents when their child is diagnosed with a                          concussion.

This brochure is intended to support a uniform system of communication (medical provider-->parent-->school) regarding concussion management for ALL children and youth in NC public schools.

  • Completed in August 2016

Phase 4 - Installation of parent brochure in ALL medical provider networks across the state

(In progress)

  • Sent to NC Medical Society and NC Pediatric Society for publication in their respective (September) newsletters
  • Sending to all Urgent Care facilities
  • Working with hospitals in NC to get placed in all Emergency Discharge units

Phase 5 - Continue information sharing on Phases 1,2,3 to all public schools/medical providers/parents

(Ongoing)

The State Board of Education Policy on concussion monitoring and the companion Implementation Guide can be accessed via the following link: http://www.nchealthyschools.org/legislation/stateboard/

- A copy of the parent brochure is also attached.

Feel free to share this information in order to bring awareness to the resources available on mTBI (concussion).
