Members of the State Employees’ Credit Union established the "People Helping People" four-year scholarship program to assist North Carolina public charter high school students attend college. The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation takes an active role in assisting communities across North Carolina and truly believes in “people helping people!”

Although the SECU Scholarship Program wishes to recognize academic achievement, the “People Helping People” Scholarship has a much broader purpose; recognizing leadership, integrity and community involvement.

After careful consideration the following students are chosen as recipients of the 2016 SECU Scholarship:

AP/IB Exam Fee Information

Please see the attached document that was originally sent out in December 2015 for general information regarding this year’s AP/IB Exam coverage.

AP INVOICES – Due June 3

Now that AP exams are complete, it is very important that we help to make sure that the testing/AP coordinators at your schools are aware of the AP Exam invoicing due date of June 3rd or NC public schools.  If your schools do not submit their invoice to College Board by this date, NCDPI will not be responsible for your students’ test fees and invoices will be the school/district’s responsibility.  Note that late fees and other fees remain the responsibility of the school/district. We encourage you and school staff to watch the video at All testing/AP coordinators should watch a short instructional presentation at  http://ncapp.weebly.com/nc-ap-invoice-instructions---2016.html which explains the invoicing process for NC public schools this year.  Districts who do not submit their AP Exam invoices to College Board by June 3rd will be responsible for AP exam costs in their district.  Make sure your school AP Coordinators know how to submit the invoice and do so by June 3.  You do not need to send DPI a copy of your invoice.  See the attached document for more details about invoices.

IB INVOICES

DPI has processed the state-wide invoice from IBO for all IB exams and registration fees.  You may still receive invoices through their automated service.  Please disregard the test fees; however, note that you are responsible for additional fees that you may have needed.

AP Summer Institute (APSI) Scholarships – Due May 25

PLEASE make sure your teachers have registered for the APSI scholarships by Wednesday, May 25.  This opportunity is an incredible opportunity for FREE professional development for your AP Teachers from June-August 2016 thanks to our NC AP Partnership.  These scholarships will cover the cost of registration and lab fees for NC AP Summer Institutes.  In addition, scholarship recipients will also be eligible to apply for a daily stipend after attending the APSI, and districts will also receive $100 travel reimbursement for teachers from whom we have confirmed attendance. Please contact your district’s AP Coordinator for more information.  We still have several school districts who have not taken advantage of this scholarship for teacher professional development!  Do not let this opportunity pass you by.  Scholarships that go un-used by districts will be opened up to a first-come, first served basis late next week.  Please contact Kathleen Koch, NC AP Partnership Director, for details. Koch, Kathleen kkoch@collegeboard.org

ASW Reviewers Application Available – Due June 1

The Analysis of Student Work Reviewer Application is now open online for this summer’s review.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ASWreview2016

I encourage you to please recruit AP and IB teachers to become an ASW reviewer.  In order for this process to be effective for AP and IB teachers, we must have teachers to review their submission.  Note:  If you have less than 5 years of experience, but still feel that you are qualified to be a reviewer with teaching experience in other areas that gave you the foundation to become an AP/IB teacher, please apply and note that in the application (and email me directly).  See the attached email from Jennifer DeNeal for details regarding this process.

ASW Samples of Timelapsed Artifacts

By July, we will be releasing samples of Evidence Collections and Timelapsed Artifacts from AP/IB Courses that received an exceed rating.  We hope this will help you with your local professional development and teacher support needs.  Stay tuned!

Home Base

Home Base End-of-Year Processes

The annual End of Year (EOY) process for the Home Base applications is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

All Home Base applications including PowerSchool, Schoolnet, and OpenClass will be brought down and remain down until 6:00 a.m., Monday, July 11.  If the applications are returned to service prior to this date, you will be notified.

Truenorthlogic (TNL), the educator effectiveness tool, expects to follow the same scheduled downtime (June 30 - July 11).  Updates will be provided as they become available.

If you have applications that pull data from or interface to any of the Home Base applications, please have your data extractions/interfaces completed by the start of the scheduled downtime on June 30, 2016.  Because of the impact a delay could have on other projects and LEAs’ school business, no exceptions or extensions can be granted to defer the start time of EOY.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the EOY process, please contact the Home Base Support Center at homebase.incidents@its.nc.gov.

State Board of Education Data Request

The State Board of Education is considering a policy to extend the granting of emergency teaching permits (1 year term) to core subjects (including elementary educators).  The SBE has asked NCDPI to compile some data on the need in the districts for such a policy.  There is no good way to determine these vacancies except to ask you to supply the information.  Please follow the link below to a Google spreadsheet and enter the information for your district (as best you can).  Charter schools can enter their information, but they are not under the same licensing requirements as LEAs.  Given that the board meeting is next week, please supply the data by noon on Tuesday May 31st.

Enhanced NC Transcripts and Student Data Calculations

NCDPI has been working with PowerSchool to improve student endorsement functionality as well as streamlining and improving the NC transcript. These fixes were released over the weekend on 5/21/16 and users can now expect to see improved programming alignment with policy. Specifically, the calculations used for determining student eligibility for the NC Academic Scholars, Career, College, and College/UNC Endorsements has been fixed to better assess students' records to determine eligibility.

Additionally, the Future-Ready-Core and UNC graduation requirements in PowerSchool have been fully reviewed and aligned with policy. Any courses that were missing have been added to these sections and work will continue through July to streamline pathways and ensure policy alignment. As NCDPI works to continuously improve our systems, please report any continued issues to the Home Base Support Center (homebase.incidents@its.nc.gov).
