SUMMER CAMPS ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

Pullen Summer Camp

Don’t let the winter temperatures fool you – it’s time to start thinking about summer camps! Pullen Arts Center provides lots of options for kids and teens to have an art-filled summer break. We offer Art4Fun Camp for kids ages 6-11 on a weekly basis from June 15 - August 7. Campers have the opportunity to explore multiple art mediums during the week, and to ride the train or carousel at Pullen Park and go swimming at Pullen Aquatic Center. Each week of camp has a different theme. Sign up for one week, a few weeks, or spend the whole summer with us!

We also offer a satellite camp out of Walnut Creek Wetland Center for ages 12-17 the weeks of July 6-10 and July 13-17. Art4Fun II – Art & Nature Camp gives campers the opportunity to explore the relationship between art and nature. Whether campers are wading in the creek looking for found objects for art projects, sketching birds on the back deck of Walnut Creek Wetland Center, or visiting the North Carolina Museum of Art’s Museum Park, they are looking at the natural world more closely and pushing the boundaries of how they think about art.

A limited number of Give Play Scholarships are available for Art4Fun II – Art & Nature. Provided by the City of Oaks Foundation, the goal of the scholarship is to connect children and teens with the outdoors. Give Play Scholarship applications will be accepted at Pullen Arts Center until 5pm March 16.

To sign up for Art4Fun or Art4Fun II  Art & Nature or any of the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources camps, choose your dates and complete the forms in the Summer Camp Brochure. Applications can be mailed in or dropped off any time at Pullen Arts Center (105 Pullen Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607) and will be processed beginning on February 2.

WORKSHOP: A BALANCE OF ORNAMENT AND UTILITY WITH A. BLAIR CLEMO

Pottery by A. Blair Clemo

Opening reception and presentation
Friday, February 6, 7-8:30pm

Demonstration Workshop
Saturday, February 7, 9am-4pm

Join us as we welcome potter A. Blair Clemo to Pullen Arts Center. On February 6, he’ll give a presentation about his work. On February 7, he’ll be demonstrating the techniques he has mastered to create his ornamental yet functional pottery. Students of all levels of experience are welcome.

Blair’s work is made from wheel-thrown and press molded pieces combined into utilitarian forms. Each piece is a balance between ornament and utility, or as he puts it, “sincerity and irony.” They are sincere in their careful craft and potential for use, yet their assertion of material value and wealth is as transitory and uncertain as our own status in an unsteady world.

Blair is a potter and assistant professor of Craft and Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He received his MFA in Ceramics at the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, in 2010. Originally from Doylestown, PA, Blair spent many years studying ceramics and working at small production potteries in Idaho and Montana. He has been an artist in residence at The Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN; the Da Wang Culture Highland in Shenzhen, China; the Zentrum für Keramik in Berlin, Germany; and The International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary. His utilitarian pottery and installation work have been included in numerous national and international exhibitions.
