2014 Raleigh Medal of Arts: June & Tom Roberg

June and Tom Roberg

Six weeks to go until our 2014 Raleigh Medal of Arts Ceremony!

June and Tom Roberg have made a huge impact on the Raleigh arts community for decades. June started out as a volunteer for the North Carolina Symphony. She was a docent at the North Carolina Museum of Art for 10 years, becoming the group’s president. In 1998, she joined the fledgling board of Carolina Ballet, participating in the decision to appoint Ricky Weiss as artistic director. She joined the boards of the Opera Company of North Carolina, Community Music School and the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild and supported the North Carolina Master Chorale.

Tom served on the North Carolina Symphony Foundation board for 25 years, beginning another term last month. He joined the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation board and the boards of the Carolina Ballet and the North Carolina Opera Company, and served as chairman of the Governor's Business Council on the Arts and Humanities. He was part of a committee that planned and raised funds for the enhancement of Memorial Auditorium and build what is now Meymandi Concert Hall and the Fletcher Opera Theater.

Thank you June and Tom Roberg for all that you do for Raleigh!

BLOG – LESSONS ON WRITING
Bad First Drafts (excerpt)
Ian Finley, the 2012 Piedmont Laureate in Playwriting, is a wonderful teacher. I know, because I’ve taken a couple of his classes. And what he does best (he actually does many things REALLY well) is to cajole, encourage and give his full support for his students to write really bad first drafts. He doesn’t want to see a polished first draft. He wants his students to write something that is truly squirming and ugly. A truly bad first draft, in his opinion (and he’s right), if it is flawed and ugly enough, is the beginning of something beautiful. For when we just let go and allow anything to happen on the paper, there is more promise in the mess than there could ever be in the careful, constricted polish of our usual first attempts.

WORKSHOP
Faces & Figures – Atelier Tonal Studies
Spending a weekend in an abbreviated atelier-style study opportunity will inspire you to approach your canvas with renewed or newly discovered enthusiasm and confidence. Working only in values, artists of any level can strengthen their grasp of the three-dimensional world of faces and figures. Concentrating only on light and shadow effects from white statuary the first day, we’ll carry the lessons to live models the second day. Materials needed include toned paper, chalk and charcoal to complete Renaissance-style drawings. Luana Luconi Winner instructs. Supply list
