Share the Trails
By design, Raleigh’s greenway trails accommodate a variety of user groups. While this is one of the many benefits of the greenway system, it also can lead to occasional conflicts among trail users, especially in crowded conditions. With over 100 miles in the City, whether you cycle, walk, jog or skate, your experience will be safer and more enjoyable by following a few simple trail etiquette guidelines.
Pass on the left. Always look behind before changing positions on the trail.
Stay on the right side of the trail, except when passing another user.
Give audible warning before passing. Give a clear signal by using voice, such as "on your left," or using a bell or horn before passing.
Be predictable and travel in a consistent manner.
Slow your roll. Bikes are often the fastest traffic on the trail. Very fast riding is inappropriate for the trails and should be saved for the roads.
Don't block the trail. When in a group or with pets, use no more than half the trail. Pets should be under control at all times. When faster traffic comes from behind, switch from walking abreast to in-line to give room to pass.
When stopping, move off the trail. Beware of others approaching from behind and make sure they know you are pulling over.
Watch young users. Be mindful that kids sometimes veer into the path of oncoming traffic. If your child is cycling, be sure they are skilled enough to control the bike and to maneuver as needed.
Turn it down. If wearing headphones, instead of two, try just wearing one earphone.
Remember to have fun and share the trails Raleigh, they're for everyone!
