 Five Piedmont Laureates will participate in a panel
discussion at the 2014 North Carolina Literary Festival on Sunday, April 6 at 12:15pm in the James B.
Hunt Jr. Library at NC State University.
Poet Jaki Shelton Green, creative
non-fiction writer Scott Huler, playwright Ian Finley, children’s author John
Claude Bemis and writer of short fiction Carrie Knowles, the newly appointed 2014 Laureate, will discuss their relationship with the Piedmont as home and its
influence on their craft, along with how the changes that have come
and will come to the Piedmont are reflected in their writing.
Free and open to the public, the festival takes place April 3-6 at the Hunt Library and in several downtown Raleigh venues.

 In a unique collaboration between
Burning Coal Theatre Company and The Raleigh Boychoir, this original
performance piece celebrates the civil rights movement of the late 1950s/early
1960s with choral music, dance and dramatic narrative. Performances are held at the historic Murphey School, the site of Raleigh’s first integrated
school.

 ARTIST DEMO TODAY An artist demo with Cindy Morefield will take place today, March 19, from 1:15-2pm on the second floor of the Block Gallery. Cindy will demonstrate techniques used in her new series of rubbings. Watch an exciting artist in action!
UPCOMING SHOW Constructs showcases mixed media paintings by Ryan Cummings and wall sculptures by Sarah West. These distinct bodies of work function
as roadmaps of remembrance, infusing place and time with personal and
collective meaning. Case Study features an installation by Meg Stein, whose
surrealist sculptural work triggers a visceral response in her viewers. Opening Reception Thursday, April 3, 5-7pm.
CURRENT SHOW Two days left to see Surface Matters! Works by Cindy Morefield, Joyce Watkins King and Stacy Bloom Rexrode and an installation by Ross Ford are on view until Friday, March 21.

Decorated Metal Book Covers Learn traditional bookbinding
methods and basic metalsmithing techniques. Explore the design and construction
process and create copper book covers decorated by stamping, drilling, riveting
and enameling. Leave the class with three books measuring 2x2 to 3x3 inches.

Drawing: Art Adventures Experiment with colored pencils,
pen and ink, watercolors and collage on different surfaces. With your choice of
subjects such as animals, people and natural objects, works will be made on
scratchboard and turned into glue prints, cardboard cutout prints and stencil
prints using simple printmaking techniques. Print by hand and with an etching
