Sierra/Lineberry Drive Park Master Plan Kicks Off

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is planning a new neighborhood park at the intersection of Sierra Drive and Lineberry Drive in Southwest Raleigh and we want you to be involved.

The project will kick off at the Southwest CAC meeting on Monday, August 12 at 7:00 pm.  The Project Team will present information from a study of current conditions at the site and introduce a new master planning process that will serve as the blueprint for future park development.

Community members will have the opportunity to provide comments that will help shape the future of the park and learn about more ways to get involved with the project.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Parks & Recreation Gets a New Name

The Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department is now the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.  The department name change recognizes the expanded scope and the importance of the City’s cultural resources. Several citizen driven initiatives and priorities over the last several years have seen the expansion of resources that focus on the arts and historical programs and amenities. The newly established Cultural Resources section houses the Raleigh Arts and the Historic Resource and Museum areas.

Raleigh Arts administers the programs of the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Public Art and Design Board and the Pullen and Sertoma Art Centers. The Historical Resources and Museum section oversees operations and programs at the Mordecai Historic Park, the City of Raleigh Museum, the Raleigh Trolley program, the Pope House, the Latta property, the Tucker House, the Borden Building and the Fred Fletcher Amphitheater/Stone Circle.

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department manages more than 9700 acres of park land and more than 100 miles of greenway. In addition, the department offers a myriad of recreation, social and educational programs and activities for all ages and abilities.

Plant of the Month

Hibiscus

Swamp Rose-Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)

Swamp rose-mallow is a shrubby herbaceous plant that grows 3 to 8 feet tall. The flowers are very showy and can be 12 inches across. The flowers are pollinated by bees, and the seeds provide a food source for several different species of waterfowl.  This beautiful plant is common in wetlands throughout North Carolina. It is an obligate wetland plant, meaning it is found in wet habitats 99% of the time. If you have a wet area in your yard, such as a rain garden, you can grow swamp rose-mallow and enjoys its gorgeous flowers throughout the summer.
