With Chief Dolan's retirement official, Deputy Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown, a veteran of the Raleigh Police Department, has been named to serve as interim chief. The following is a short synopsis of her police career.

Deputy Chief of Police Cassandra Deck-Brown joined the Raleigh Police Department in August 1987 and was selected in December 1989 to join the department’s Crime Prevention and Community Relations Unit.

Deck-Brown was promoted to the rank of detective in August 1994 and she was selected to serve as a member of the RPD’s Youth Violence Intervention Program in July 1995.

In July 1997, Deck-Brown was promoted to sergeant and in February 2002 she was promoted to lieutenant. As a lieutenant, she served in the department’s Administrative Services Division.

In August 2003, Deck-Brown was promoted to captain, and soon assumed the role of commander of what is now the RPD’s North District.

When she was promoted to major in December 2006, Deck-Brown assumed leadership of the RPD’s Administrative Services Division.

In March 2010, Dolan assigned Deck-Brown to temporarily command the day-to-day operations of the Internal Affairs Unit, RPD inspections functions, the department’s accreditation program, and administration of the new RPD promotional processes.

She was promoted to the position of deputy chief in June 2011.
