Fostering Civic Engagement

Jake Levitas is an organizer and urban
problem solver focused on making cities work
better for people. Over the past ten years he
has worked as a social entrepreneur,
community organizer, local government
employee, data analyst, and designer — all
with the focus of helping cities and people
more meaningfully engage with each other.
He previously served in the San Francisco
Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation, where he
focused on creative approaches and policies
for engaging the public with design. In 2015,
Jake Levitas co-founded the nonprofit
Our City to help city leaders develop more
creative models for civic engagement.
As an organizer, his projects have generated
more than 40,000 hours of civic engagement,
and have been featured in The New York
Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, Fast
Company, and other outlets.

His UDC talk
will focus on the role of design and
technology in fostering civic engagement
and good government, drawing from his
personal experiences in San Francisco,
Raleigh, and beyond.
