SEEING BEYOND THE STRUCTURES [PORTRAITS OF THE LANDSCAPE]
Artists Reception:
First Friday, August 5, 5-7pm

Landscape artists of the past endeavored to capture the majestic scenery that was often far removed from most people’s lives. By contrast, artists Adam Bellefeuil, Rachel Campbell and Caitlin Cary have chosen to memorialize the modest structures we interact with in our daily environment. We stroll through residential streets, drive past fading buildings and visit neighborhood businesses without really considering their sense of place and what they might mean to the communities and individuals occupying them. The works in this exhibition challenge us to stop and take notice.

On view August 3 – September 16

BLOG EXCERPT: Owning Your Imagination
Whenever I conduct a writer’s workshop, I always learn something from the experience. Whether it's an attitude or a question or, perhaps, an unexpected answer from the audience, I always leave having realized some new truth that helps me in my own writer's journey. This past week is a great example. It was a busy week for Piedmont Laureate workshops. I conducted a workshop for elementary school students, another for high school students, and still another for adults. When I was done, I was left with the realization of how very personal imagination is, how much it fuels a writer’s need to write, and how big a role it plays in making a book your own. The week left me with a healthy respect for the connection between a writer’s imagination and their voice. Read more

Sertoma’s New Drawing Instructor

Stephen Cefalo

Please welcome Sertoma Arts Center’s   new drawing instructor, Stephen Cefalo! An artist in the traditions of Symbolism and the Baroque, his relationship with art began with his very first memory: gazing at the stained glass windows of Frauenkirche Cathedral in Nuremberg, Germany during his christening at six months old. As a small child, he was fascinated by a portrait of his grandfather in WWII Italy. As a five-year-old, he studied renditions of velvet in presidential portraits during museum visits. At age 12, he began lessons in oils. Stephen exhibits and is collected nationally and is published frequently in popular art magazines as a featured artist and columnist.

Class Info
Stephen is currently offering an Anatomy and Figure Drawing course at Sertoma, with plans to continue teaching adult and teen drawing courses as well as painting and drawing workshops.
