Letterland brings letters
to life by turning them into colorful characters, each with their own
personality and stories that go along with their sounds. Wake County elementary schools and many
preschool programs use the phonics program as part of their literacy
instruction.
The Wake County Public
School System, WAKE Up and Read Collaborative, Wake Education Partnership and
Sinclair Broadcasting will partner with Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural
Resources to bring Letterland characters and activities to Pullen Park for an
exciting Letterland Adventure Day.
Children will be welcomed
by Firefighter Fred and a real fire engine. They’ll meet Annie Apple, Bouncy
Ben and Clever Cat. Children can ride on
Clever Cat’s carousel and drive in one of Bouncy Ben’s boats. They can travel
with Letterlanders on Talking Tess’s train, have their face painted with Impy
Ink and make noise with Noisy Nick.
Children can play a game of Munching Mike’s Bean Bag Toss, make Kicking
King or Quarrelsome Queen crowns, join the Letterland parade, and enjoy school
group performances on the large stage. Pullen Place Café will offer Munching
Mike’s Menu for delicious food and options.

This summer, the City of Raleigh
Museum will partner with Seed Art Share again to bring an exciting children’s
program. This original scavenger-play, written by Raleigh playwright Ian Finley,
invites history buffs ages 8 to 12 to join Sir Walter Raleigh for a night of
intrigue and mystery-solving in the Museum. Lost artifacts and hidden clues
have turned the Museum upside down. Participants will receive their very own
souvenir flashlight and follow the trail as influential characters in Raleigh’s
history unfold the past. While the children explore parents get their very own
date night with a free appetizer at the Busy Bee Café. This 45-minute show will
run June 17th, July 15th, and August 19th at
5:00pm, 6:30pm, and 8:00pm each night. Space is limited. Tickets can be ordered
online at Seed Art Share.

 Raleigh’s Forgotten Symbol
Saturday, June 11th 10am - 11:30am
Celebrate Flag Day at the City of Raleigh Museum. Since 1777 Flag Day has been an annual holiday
on June 14th to commemorate the adoption of the United States flag,
but did you know the City of Raleigh has a flag? The City of Raleigh is one of
approximately 450 cities in the United States to have their own flag. The flag,
originally made by Kate Denson in 1899 is now housed in the City of Raleigh
Museum collection.
The flag, recently removed from exhibition, is in need of
conservation work. Come get a closer look at the flag and enjoy a free lecture.
Local Raleigh historian, Joe Mobley, will explore the history of the flag and
its role in early 1900s Raleigh. Hear about the flags past conservation and
current conservation needs with local textile conservator, Paige Myers, as she
discusses the flag and helpful techniques to help preserve your personal
heirlooms.
Light refreshments following.
