Caution during in-water activities is urged due to area jellyfish

Post Date: 08/18/2022

NOTICE: For the remainder of Thursday, August 18, 2022, the Oak Island Beach Services Unit has placed the current Beach Warning Flag condition at PURPLE. Though not directly related to surf conditions, the purple flag indicates a high concentration of potentially harmful marine life, such as jellyfish.

While forecasts from the National Weather Service maintain at GREEN flag status, indicating a low risk of RIP and LONGSHORE currents, a high concentration of jellyfish observed locally has caused the addition of the purple flag for Oak Island. The beach areas are still safe to enjoy, but ocean swimming and in-water activity should be done with caution

Please heed the warning of these local observations. To learn more about the meaning of each Beach Warning Flag colors, or to view current conditions, visit the Beach Safety page of the Town Website at www.OakIslandNC.gov/SAFETY.
