Application Deadline for NHC Boards & Committees
Monday, March 9
Citizens interested in serving on an NHC board or committee must submit formal applications by Monday, March 9 in order to be considered by the Board of Commissioners at the March 23 meeting. Applications can be obtained at the Board of Commissioners office, located at 230 Government Center Drive, Suite 175, requested by phone at 910-798-7149, or found online at Commissioners.NHCgov.com.

Bird Hike
Wednesday, March 11 at 8- 9:30 a.m.
Fly over to Airlie Gardens to participate in our monthly Bird Hikes, co-hosted with Wild Bird & Garden. Birders of all levels are encouraged to join this free event and more information can be found at airliegardens.org or by calling 910-798-7700.
Preschool Pop-up Science
Wednesday, March 11 at 10 a.m.
Meet new friends in your community for fun hands-on activities through the Cape Fear Museum. Enjoy interactive circle time and learn new things related to the week's theme - "Carnivorous Plants." Perfect for children ages 3 to 6 and their adult helpers. This free event is hosted by the MLK Center at 401 South 8th Street.
Car Seat Check
Thursday, March 12, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m.
NHC Fire Rescue, the Wilmington Fire Department, and Safe Kids will partner to hold a car seat check at the Wilmington Fire Station 9, located at 1201 Military Cutoff Road. This event is free and anyone with a car seat is encouraged to come and have it check for proper installation and safety.
Experience STEM-ILM 2.0 Fundraiser
Thursday, March 12, 5:30- 8 p.m.
Explore the future of how we live, work and play at a one-night-only, hands-on event. Dream about what is to come and see innovation in action as you enjoy STEM-inspired food, drink, and entertainment. Network with tech execs, explore technology stations, create in the Cape Fear Museum maker space, and be a scientist for a night. Advance tickets are $20 for Cape Fear Museum members and $25 for non-members. Tickets can also be purchased day-of for $25 for members and $30 for non-members. Little Explorers
Friday, March 13 & Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m.
Meet your friends for fun hands-on activities, enjoy interactive circle time, conduct exciting experiments, and play games based on the week's theme of "Little Einsteins." Perfect for children ages 3 to 6 and their adult helpers. This free event is held at the Cape Fear Museum at 814 Market Street.
Spring Book Sale
Begins Friday, March 13
It's time for the semi-annual used book sale, hosted by the NHC Public Library and Friends of the Library. Gently used hardbacks are on sale for $3 each, paperbacks are $2 each, and various used AV items are $3. This free event will be held at the Northeast Library on the following dates and times:

Trash Mob
Saturday, March 14, 9-11 a.m.
Do you want to help keep New Hanover County beautiful? Join NHC Parks Conservancy Trash Mob for the quarterly Adopt-a-Highway litter clean-up on Harris Road by Smith Creek Park. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to participate. Bags, gloves, safety vests, and other supplies are provided. Email Parks for more information or to sign up.
Earth Optimism Teen Event: Changing the Climate Conversation
Saturday, March 14, 12:30- 4:30 p.m.
Interested in making a positive impact on the planet? Join area teens at the National Earth Optimism Teen Conversation project at the Cape Fear Museum. The museum has been selected as one of the ten Smithsonian Affiliate museums to promote the leadership of young people, ages 13-19, to join in solution-focused action around critical environmental issues. At this free event, teens will take part in a virtual Earth Optimism discussion with teens around the country as a part of a Smithsonian panel; meet local scientists, volutneers, and peers to learn more about environmental science; network with experts from Plastic Ocean Project, 350 Wilmington, and other local organizations; and take part in two Empowerment sessions to engage with experts on Climate Change and Plastic-free living. Medicare Town Hall
Monday, March 16, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center invite Medicare recipients to a Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) town hall meeting to learn more about Medicare cost-saving programs. Participants will have the opportunity to meet Commissioner Causey and get information about Medicare basics. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free to the public and will be held in the NHC Government Center at 230 Government Center Drive. Board of Commissioners March Meetings

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) Open Enrollment
Through March 31, 2020
New Hanover County residents can apply for assistance with heating costs through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) until March 31, 2020, or until funds are exhausted. The program provides a one-time annual vendor payment to help eligible families pay their heating expenses. The New Hanover County Department of Social Services administers the program locally, and applications must be done in person at the Health and Human Services building located at 1650 Greenfield Street. Heating bill and proof of all household income are needed to determine eligibility. Visit the Social Services website or call (910) 798-3400 for more information.
Free Income Tax Assistance
Do you have questions about your 2019 taxes, or just need help getting your tax information together? New Hanover residents can receive free tax preparation and filing by a trained and IRS-certified volunteer through the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service will be available through April 15 for all residents, regardless of age, at the following locations:

- January 31 – March 6: Mon., Wed. & Fri., 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Tues. & Thurs., 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
