Social Worker Appreciation Month
New Hanover County Free Day
Sunday, March 1
New Hanover County residents, students, teachers, and employees are invited to enjoy Airlie Gardens, the Cape Fear Museum, or the Arboretum for free during regular business hours. Proof of residency, employment, or student status is required. As a reminder, the Arboretum is always free.
Exploring Women's History
Sunday, March 1, 2- 4 p.m.
Join Cape Fear Museum staff to kick off Women's History Month. Hear stories of women's experiences in New Hanover County as told by Dr. Jan Davidson. Learn about a diverse group of women, including World War I army nurse Rachel Loman; Augusta Mosely Cooper, the first black woman to run for city council; entrepreneur and milliner Lelia Corbin; and tennis star Althea Gibson. Curator Heather Yenco will showcase a special sampling of artifacts related to these women's stories. This event is free to the public.
2020 Statewide Primary Election
Tuesday, March 3, 6:30 a.m- 7:30 p.m.
The 2020 Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. All 43 New Hanover County precincts are open on March 3 from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. This is the last chance that a person has to vote in the election. Voters should report to the polling place specific to the voting precinct noted on voter registration records. Preschool Pop-up Science
Wednesday, March 4 at 10 a.m.
Meet new friends in your community for fun hands-on activities through the Cape Fear Museum. Enjoy interactive circle time and learn new things related to the week's theme - "Math Mania." Perfect for children ages 3 to 6 and their adult helpers. This free event is hosted by the MLK Center at 401 South 8th Street.
Plan and a Prayer: Emergency Planning for Faith Communities
Thursday, March 5, 8 a.m.- 10 a.m.
Designed to support faith-based partners, this workshop will introduce resources available to help develop all-hazard preparedness plans for the faith community. Emergency planners, first responders, and community partners will share how we can partner in building a more resilient community and assist one another in emergencies. This free event is hosted by NHC Emergency Management and the New Hanover Disaster Coalition, and a light breakfast will be provided. The event will be held at the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive, in the Andre Mallete Training Room. Registration is encouraged and can be found online.
Partnership Advisory Group Meetings
Thursday, March 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The New Hanover County and New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) Partnership Advisory Group will continue meeting at the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive, in the Andre Mallete Training Room. The meetings are open to the public, and additional information from each meeting including the presentations, minutes and audio recordings are also available at NHRMCfuture.org. The public is encouraged to share feedback with the PAG by emailing PAGcomments@nhcgov.com.

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) Open Enrollment
Through March 31, 2020
New Hanover County residents can apply for assistance with heating costs through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) until March 31, 2020, or until funds are exhausted. The program provides a one-time annual vendor payment to help eligible families pay their heating expenses. The New Hanover County Department of Social Services administers the program locally, and applications must be done in person at the Health and Human Services building located at 1650 Greenfield Street. Heating bill and proof of all household income are needed to determine eligibility. Visit the Social Services website or call (910) 798-3400 for more information.
Free Income Tax Assistance
Do you have questions about your 2019 taxes, or just need help getting your tax information together? New Hanover residents can receive free tax preparation and filing by a trained and IRS-certified volunteer through the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service will be available through April 15 for all residents, regardless of age, at the following locations:
