Fayetteville, NC - The stage was set ablaze with excitement as Cumberland County Schools (CCS) launched the 2023-2024 school year with an electrifying Back-to-School Convocation centered around the theme "Cumberland Strong: United for Student Success." The Crown Arena came to life with more than 6,000 CCS employees joining forces to kick off what promises to be an exceptional year for education in Cumberland County.
The event ignited with pulsating rhythms as the drumlines from Terry Sanford High School and Pine Forest High School welcomed attendees. The fervor continued with a soul-stirring performance on saxophone of the National Anthem by Dominic Hunter from Douglas Byrd High School. Adding to the spectacle, Cape Fear High School's Navy JROTC unit, under the guidance of Senior Chief Officer Quincy Packer, presented the ceremonial colors.
CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. captivated the audience with a compelling vision of the new school year focused on “Cumberland Strong” and uniting for the success of every student, regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status. Board Chairwoman Deanna Jones echoed this sentiment, expressing anticipation for another year of remarkable growth and achievement.
The heart of Convocation 2023 was undeniably illuminated through vibrant performances and presentations. A standout highlight was the introduction of CCS' newest partner in student success, the dynamic mascot Cooper, who was named by CCS students. Symbolizing collaboration, competition, and triumph, Cooper embodies the spirit that propels students forward toward excellence.
Stealing the spotlight, Dr. Donyall Dickey, an esteemed education expert, delivered a powerful keynote address that reverberated with educators and staff. Under the theme "Beneficiary of a Giant Slayer!," Dr. Dickey inspired attendees to recognize and overcome the challenges that hinder student success. His rallying cry, "There are children in CCS for whom no one will come, but it doesn't mean they don't have the capacity. SEE THEM," resonated deeply, igniting a call to action for educators.
The event culminated with the recognition of exceptional achievements, including the unveiling of the 2024 “Of the Year” winners: Assistant Principal of the Year: Kristle Rouse (Westover High School), Principal of the Year: Erica Fenner-McAdoo (Howard Hall Elementary School), Beginning Teacher of the Year: Sade' Mangum (Seventy-First High School), and Teacher of the Year: Steven Barbour (Terry Sanford High School).
Notably, the district's 10 attendance areas vied for the coveted CCS Broadway Revue honor through exhilarating musical performances. The 2023 CCS Broadway Revue Crown was claimed by the Jack Britt Warriors, who captured the essence of the Pride Lands with their enthralling rendition of "Circle of Life!”
Dr. Connelly concluded the event, emphasizing the district's unwavering commitment to equity and empowerment. As the curtain fell on Convocation 2023, the spotlight remained on unity, passion, and the district’s unwavering dedication to fostering student success.
