DSS ‘JOB BOOST’ PROGRAM MARKS CONTINUING SUCCESS

 

Charlotte, NC – The Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services (DSS) has been awarded another year of the North Carolina Job Boost Program grant due to the success from the program over the last fiscal year.

 

DSS has been awarded a $1.32 million grant by the State of North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for the support of 200 jobs to residents eligible for the Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which serves Work First customers.

 

Over the last fiscal year, Job Boost I clients had the opportunity to be employed in jobs that paid on average $8 to $12 per hour. Through May 2011, the state reported 578 placements for Job Boost I. From January 1 to May 31 of this year, Mecklenburg County DSS referred 256 people from Work First and TANF to the Job Boost I program, which had a placement goal of 140 customers. Mecklenburg County Job Boost I has exceeded its goal with 148 placements out of the state’s total of 578.

 

Community partners and businesses working with DSS on the Job Boost I project included Ashley Home Furniture, Brisbane Academy, Center for Community Transitions, Discovery Place, Distribution Tech Inc., Dystar, Family First Partnerships, Goodwill Retail Stores, Goodworks Staffing, LJM Christian Academy, Jacob’s Ladder, Marshalls, Ovations/Knight Stadium, Pactive, Piedmont Plastics, Statesville Avenue Presbyterian Church, ResCare, Staffmark, TJ Maxx, Today Tech, Triton, the Urban League and many others.

 

“We are delighted to receive funding to continue this successful jobs program in Mecklenburg County,” said Mary Wilson, DSS director. “DSS continues to look for opportunities to provide ways for our clients to gain self-sufficiency, and through the Job Boost program we have a direct way to accomplish that goal.”

 

As of July 25, 2011, Job Boost II was fully operational with a goal of 200 clients placed through the length of the program. Employers throughout Mecklenburg County have an opportunity to help strengthen our county’s economy, and to invest in creating productive citizens in our region.
