Legislative Update
The legislative session continues to progress at a rapid rate. The General Assembly passed SB 99, the FY 2018-19 State Budget, which includes the majority of the County’s 2018 legislative priorities. The session is expected to adjourn by mid-June.
Prior to adjournment, the County will continue to work on multiple pieces of pending legislation, including bills dealing with state building code revisions, child support, board of education lawsuits, private eviction process servers and various fees.
For additional information on legislative issues please contact Starla Tanner, legislative affairs liaison, at 980-314-2884 or Starla.Tanner@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.
Future of the Main Library Town Hall Meeting Set for June 26
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will hold its next town hall-style meeting on the future of the Main Library on Tuesday, June 26. Commissioners and residents are invited to attend the event, which takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Francis Auditorium. Free parking will be available for those who register in advance. Parking details will be emailed to you soon after registration.
Late last year, the Library unveiled its vision for a new “public commons” to empower and inspire our community and contribute to our civic life.
This session will include information on the kinds of spaces the Library is proposing to support, its innovative programs and collections, and the initial design concepts for the building. The Library will also be looking to seek feedback on the information presented.
For more information, contact the Library at 704-416-0602.
Park and Recreation Natural Resources Staff Produce Book on Local Birds
North Carolina is home to hundreds of species of birds, and thanks to Park and Recreation’s Don Seriff and Leigh Anne Carter, you can now learn all about them.
Seriff, a natural resources coordinator, recently produced “Birds of the Central Carolinas” - a 608-page report in the form of an archival hardback book that documents almost 400 species with detailed profiles of 312 species. It includes historical research, original illustrations, photographs, personal accounts, field notes, scientific studies and stories from in and around Mecklenburg County over the last 150 years. Leigh Anne Carter, a natural resources assistant and amazing artist, hand-drew the illustrations for each species.
The book was funded entirely by donations from the Mecklenburg Audubon Society and Partners for Parks. Research efforts for the project were partially funded by grants from NC State Wildlife, Audubon NC, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and Mecklenburg Audubon.
You can purchase the book at Park Road Books, Mecklenburg Audubon’s website www.meckbirds.org and the County’s three Nature Centers: Latta, McDowell, and Reedy Creek. A limited number are available at Wild Birds Unlimited and at the Carolina Raptor Center. The book retails at $45.
The proceeds of the sale of the books online and at Park Road Books go back to Mecklenburg Audubon to fund additional outreach projects like this.
