Superintendent Hedalen Suspends First Teaching License of the Year; Seeks to Strengthen Licensure Violation Reporting to the State

HELENA, Mont.—Superintendent of Public Instruction Susie Hedalen issued an emergency suspension of Cody Alan Davis’ K-8 Standard Teaching License following his recent felony charges in Missoula County of “Sexual Abuse of Children-By Means of Communication-Under 13” and “Sexual Abuse of Children-Travel with Intent-Under 13”. Mr. Davis was not currently teaching but had an active teaching license. The OPI is in contact with districts in which he was previously employed while law enforcement continues their criminal investigation. Superintendent Hedalen issued the following statement:

“The OPI will continue to aggressively pursue allegations of immoral conduct by licensed educators to ensure these individuals are not allowed anywhere near Montana’s classrooms. Student safety is my top priority and I will not allow predators into our schools or to tarnish the teaching profession for those who honorably serve our families every day. Further, I am reviewing Montana’s mandatory reporting statutes to ensure that those engaging in inappropriate or illegal behavior are immediately reported to my office and not allowed to slip through the cracks. I commend Missoula law enforcement for their swift arrest of Mr. Davis. While a criminal conviction could result in years in the Montana State Prison, I am actively working to ensure Mr. Davis will be permanently stripped of his teaching license and will never again be entrusted with the care, supervision, or education of Montana’s children.”

The Superintendent has the authority under MCA 2-4-631 to suspend a license in emergency situations. She has recommended the Board of Public Education use their authority under MCA 20-4-110 to permanently revoke his teaching license.
