Superintendent Hedalen Launches AED Reimbursement Program to Support Student Safety
Helena, Mont. — Superintendent of Public Instruction Susie Hedalen today announced the launch of the Montana AED Reimbursement Program, a new initiative to help schools acquire and maintain lifesaving automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This important program is made possible thanks to the passage of House Bill 869, sponsored by Representative Melissa Romano, whose leadership and partnership were critical in advancing this legislation.
“AEDs save lives,” said Superintendent Hedalen. “This program ensures that schools especially during athletic events and other high-risk activities are equipped to respond quickly in the event of cardiac emergencies. We are grateful to Representative Romano for championing this legislation and prioritizing student safety.”
House Bill 869, passed during the 2025 legislative session, created a grant fund to reimburse school districts for up to $700 per AED or AED maintenance costs. The program will operate on a 1:1 matching basis and funds will be disbursed through two application windows on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Grant Window 1 is open July 18 through October 15, with each district eligible for up to $700 in reimbursements.
- Grant Window 2 runs from January 15 through March 15, 2026, and allows districts to apply for any remaining funds without, again on a first-come, first-served basis and up to $700 per individual AED.
