  Summer Food Service Program 2025
MT OPI is gearing up for the 2025 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) season! The SFSP is operated by local non-profits and schools that distribute and serve free meals over the summer to all children 18 and under. Applications to operate the SFSP this year will be open in MAPS from March 3rd to May 16th. Montana Sponsors will again have the option of operating rural non-congregate sites at eligible locations. Please consider attending our Wednesday Webinar on March 5th at 2:00 pm for more information on program regulations and basic logistics for operating the SFSP. This webinar will be recorded and uploaded to our website.
Required annual training modules are ready for new and returning sponsors; use access code mt-406 to complete the modules. SFSP site area eligibility may be determined using this map provided by the USDA.

Clue In to School Breakfast
National School Breakfast Week Campaign Encourages Students to Try School Breakfast
The Office of Public Instruction is thrilled to announce the celebration of National School Breakfast Week, taking place from March 3rd-7th, 2025. National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program, a federally assisted meal program operating in public and non-profit private schools and residential child care institutions since 1975.
Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. Fortunately, 95% of Montana school sites that operate the National School Lunch Program also operate the School Breakfast Program offering nutritious school breakfasts, complete with fruit, low-fat or fat-free milk, and whole grain and/or protein items to ensure students are fueled for learning every school day.
The 2025 NSBW campaign theme, “Clue In to School Breakfast,” highlights the importance of a healthy school breakfast in fueling academic success and overall well-being and also recognizes the dedicated school nutrition professionals who make it all possible. NSBW also reminds the entire school community that school breakfast provides a healthy and energizing start to the day for students. Research shows that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:
- Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
- Score higher on standardized tests
- Have better concentration and memory
- Be more alert
- Maintain a healthy weight
Find NSBW resources from School Nutrition Association here including the NSBW Toolkit providing fun activities.
