If you’re passionate about developing your leadership skills and creating a lasting impact for our organization, then it’s time to begin preparing to run for a state officer position.
The campaign process to become a state officer gave me great amounts of confidence and provided valuable lessons on how to market myself, in addition to being super fun. The responsibility of representing the state is incredibly rewarding. Here’s what to do to set yourself up for success:
View the complete State Officer Application Packet by going to the MTBPA website → Resources → Student Member Resources → State Officer Application Packet.
|
Fill out several documents with your information, including questions on general BPA knowledge. The most important documents in the packet are your resume, a letter of recommendation, and proof that you have at least achieved the Statesman torch award.
It is prohibited to engage in any campaigning before your initial meeting with the other candidates at the State Leadership Conference. Once that is done, feel free to begin networking and gaining support.
Your first impression to all the members at SLC is during your 2 minute speech. The format has changed from last year, we now only have a single speech that includes your introduction, your qualifications, and what you wish to accomplish with an officer position, all framed through an object that represents you. This object should be the image of your campaign, and it should represent your unique qualities and skills. It’s important that you use this speech as an opportunity to make you stand out among the other candidates and have your personality shine through.
|
Your second opportunity to gain the support of voting delegates is during the campaign rally. Following the 2 minute speeches, the candidates will adjourn to a separate room to set up tables for their campaigns. This typically features poster boards, business cards, stickers, candy, and any other merchandise, likely on theme with your item (specifics can be found in the application packet).
|
|
 |
IMPORTANT: Candidates are limited to a $50 budget for all supplies at their table. Candidates must bring proof of the cost breakdown by giving their budgets and receipts to the officer board.
Your final public appearance as a candidate is during the Special Delegate Meeting. At this time, the current officer team will ask each candidate identical questions (*unknown to the candidates) in front of a crowd of voting delegates.
Once the votes are counted and the 6 new officers are announced, each will be interviewed to determine which position (President, Vice President, Secretary, Communications Director, Public Relations Director, Membership Director) they are best suited for.
This is your chance to be a voice for the next generation of business leaders. I highly encourage you to take the step towards this opportunity. Step up and improve the future of BPA!
1016 registered attendees and guests, 24 agricultural educator award winners, and 10 middle/high/post-secondary school programs recognized.

We were so proud to be recognized on the national stage in San Antonio last week among this fantastic group of agricultural supporters. It’s a great time to be in the Montana State University Department of Agricultural and Technology Education!
