K-12 IEFA Grant Opportunities for 2024-2025 School Year
The time to begin planning for next year is now! The IEFA K-12 Discretionary Grant presents an exciting opportunity for schools to enhance their educational offerings with a focus on Indian Education for All (IEFA) implementation during the 2024-2025 school year. Administered by Jennifer Stadum, the grant aims to support schools in integrating Essential Understandings and culturally authentic materials into their curriculum. Here’s a concise guide on how to leverage this opportunity effectively:
-
Initiate Contact with Jennifer Stadum: Before August 1, educators should reach out to Jennifer Stadum via email, phone call, or office hours to discuss their ideas for IEFA implementation.
-
Planning and Budgeting: Once in contact with Jennifer, educators will receive guidance on planning and budgeting for their proposed IEFA activities. This step is crucial for ensuring that the proposed activities align with the grant’s objectives and budget constraints.
-
Approval Process: After finalizing the activities, timeline, and budget, educators and administrators must seek approval from Jennifer Stadum. Upon approval, they will receive further instructions on the application process.
-
Grant Activities: The grant supports various activities aimed at integrating IEFA into the curriculum. Some of these activities include:
Development of Curriculum and Instructional Tools:
Educators can allocate off-contract paid time for:
- Creating standards-aligned supplemental lessons and resources integrating Essential Understandings into content areas.
- Developing tribally specific, culturally authentic, and historically accurate curricular materials concerning Montana Indians.
- Designing and implementing inquiry-based depth-of-study units focused on Montana and American Indian themes.
- Production of high-quality instructional materials aligned with OPI IEFA literature units or supplementing existing materials is encouraged.
Acceptable Professional Development:
Workshops and training sessions aim to:
- Fortify educators' grasp of Essential Understandings.
- Facilitate seamless integration of IEFA into teaching practices.
- Enhance background knowledge specific to tribes.
- Address biases, stereotypes, and promote the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives.
- Professional development may include content integration, lesson planning, and curriculum development training led by IEFA experts.
Other Utilization of Grant Funds:
Educators can use funds to:
- Facilitate guest lectures, lessons, or learning activities by tribal knowledge keepers, elders, or esteemed tribal members.
- Support IEFA-related initiatives, special events, or field trips, pending approval during the grant application planning phase.
Grant activities must take place between September 15, 2024 – May 15, 2025. Through careful planning and implementation of IEFA activities, educators can create a more enriching learning experience for all students while honoring the diverse cultural heritage of Montana Indians.
