Don't miss out! Order Montana Marinara for school year 2024-25 on your USDA Foods survey!
Montana Marinara is the first in a line of locally sourced value-added products for schools developed through collaborative partnerships. MT OPI diverts USDA Foods tomatoes to the Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center in Ronan, MT where they are combined with Montana-grown carrots, onions, squash, and safflower oil sourced through the Western Montana Growers Cooperative and the Northwest Food Hub Network. The final product is veggie-packed, cost-conscious, and accessible to districts across the state through OPI’s existing distribution network. By working together, we leverage each other’s strengths, support hard-working Montana farmers, and expand access to affordable local food for schools like yours.
The cost of MT Marinara for next school year will be $8.90/case, which will be drawn down from your entitlement fund. The sauce will be made with veggies from the upcoming 2024 harvest and delivered to you in late 2024 or early 2025.

2024 National School Breakfast Week: March 4-8, 2024
Surf’s Up with School Breakfast
Say “Aloha” to this year’s National School Breakfast Week theme! “Surf’s Up with School Breakfast” is here to bring some tropical warmth to your spring months, particularly as students look forward to Spring Break. The theme is designed to bring the excitement and energy of surfing culture to your cafeteria while keeping the focus on healthy and delicious breakfast options.
National School Breakfast Week, NSBW, at its core, is about promoting nutritious breakfast menu items in an engaging way for students. This year's tropical theme is all about bringing the fun and flavors of the beach to our breakfast tables while emphasizing the importance of starting the day with a healthy meal. This year, bring a tropical vibe to your breakfast program, encouraging everyone to ride the wave of nutritious and delicious morning meals. Not only emphasize the enjoyment of tropical flavors but also the importance of nourishing our bodies with nutritious food. As we know, a healthy breakfast sets the tone for a successful day. By choosing whole grains, fresh fruits, and dairy, students are not only fueling their bodies but also building lifelong habits for a healthy future.
National School Breakfast Week is not just a week of fun; it's a testament to the power of school breakfast programs and a chance to recognize the incredible work done and meals produced by our schools. Montana schools provided 6,128,427 School Breakfast Program meals in SY2022-23. Thank you to all school districts that provide students with nutritious meals.
We hope schools will join in embracing this fun theme and enjoy a week filled with exciting activities and tropical treats. Participate with #NSLB24 and show off how your school breakfast fuels you!
Policy Memorandum: SFSP 03-2024, SP 05-2024: Implementation Guidance for the Rural Non-congregate Option Provisions of the Interim Final Rule, Establishing the Summer EBT Program and Rural Non-Congregate Option in the Summer Meal Programs
In December 29, 2022, President Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (the Act) (P.L. 117-328). The Act amended section 13 of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, 42 USC 1761, to include the authorization of a permanent, rural non-congregate meal service through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) which the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is extending to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Seamless Summer Option (SSO). Per the statutory requirement, on December 29, 2023, FNS published an interim final rule, Establishing the Summer EBT Program and Rural Non-congregate Option in the Summer Meal Programs [fns.usda.gov]. This rulemaking, effective December 29, 2023, codified the permanent rural non-congregate summer meal service for both SFSP and SSO, as well as created the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children Program (Summer EBT). While non-congregate summer meal service for rural areas was initially implemented through FNS guidance during summer 2023, that guidance is superseded by the interim final rule.
