It is Not Too Late, but Time is Running Out
The clock is ticking for school districts to participate in the USDA Farm to School Census - the only national survey that examines local food purchasing, gardens, and agricultural education in schools. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service will close participation in its fourth USDA Farm to School Census by the end of December, and then the chance will be gone.
School Food Authorities (SFAs) can help the USDA gauge the impacts, scale, and needs of farm to school programming across the nation and within Montana by responding to the Farm to School Census. The data provides the USDA, Montana Office of Public Instruction, and other key stakeholders critical information on farm to school gaps and needs to provide relevant and effective resources and services. It also allows stakeholders to showcase their successes and garner local support to continue farm to school efforts.
MT OPI wants to see 100% of School Food Authorities, whether they participate in farm to school or not, complete the Farm to School Census to provide an accurate picture of farm to school activity in Montana. To accomplish this goal, we need your district's participation. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Your farm to school efforts matter! Don’t miss this opportunity to tell the nation and Montana that #LocalCounts!

Clarification of Allowable Flexibilities for Child Nutrition Programs Experiencing Milk Supply Shortages
FNS is aware that schools in multiple states are experiencing milk supply chain challenges related to packaging issues. This memorandum provides state agencies with information about existing authority related to schools and other child nutrition program operators experiencing inadequate milk supply. FNS encourages state agencies to use this authority when needed to support program operators impacted by the current milk packaging challenges.
