On the Road Again
Our TSARR team is out and about making trips to meet with our Tribal Nations. Consultation and tribal voice being the focus as we work with Tribes and School Districts to work together for the benefit of the students. Traveling to the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, and Fort Peck Tribal Nations to close out September and going into October.
Tribal Student Achievement
This month AISA has been focused on creating an Indigenous Whole Learner Framework with the purpose of viewing student achievement across life domains through an indigenous lens. We are working collaboratively with School Improvement to align strategies for supporting our schools work around Family and Community Engagement, what success looks like, and the upcoming work being done around the Graduate Profile. The current AISA specialist continues to work closely with a pilot school for integrating an academic wraparound process to increase opportunities for achievement and graduation. AISA participated in the quarterly Tribal consultation where we were happy to share the work being done to integrate culturally relevant instruction, positive school climate, and trauma-informed practices. In the coming months we hope to focus on providing resources and guidance to teachers and districts to increase motivation and engagement.
Youth Leadership
RISE youth leadership starts off their zoom meetings September 28th! Students are excited and they will be planning out regional events for November. If your school and students are interested in joining, please contact Alicia Doney @ alicia.doney@mt.gov.
Language and Culture
Happy October everyone!
In Nakoda, some call this time of year Tasnaheja-hagikta, The Stripped Gopher Looks Back. Many animals may be taking their last look at the nice weather before they prepare for hibernation. Some call this time Anukope, Joins both Sides, which referred to mixture of Summer and Winter weather. Similarly, we hope our friends and family had a good warm season and are preparing for the cold.
Our TSARR team will be hitting the road to consult with tribal councils and education leaders in their communities. We’re excited to keep the movement for Language and Culture inclusivity going with guidance and input from our tribal nation leaders. Our goal is to help facilitate the discussions necessary for our educators to honor the intent of Indian Education for All and for our youth to feel authentically represented through their experience in our schools. There are many education leaders and representatives from each tribal community that are available for visits and consultation, please reach out to your local tribal governments, education committees, or through our Tribal Student Achievement, Relations and Resiliency Unit for more information on establishing relationships.
Our tribes have been hard at work developing Language and Culture education material this year through the Montana Indian Language Program grant. The next round of applications will be opening up soon so look forward to more dynamic teaching resources to come!
