Summer Work
Amba daya midaguyabi!
Happy Capasapsaba, or Black Cherries Moon in Nakoda. This is the time the chokecherries were typically ready for picking. Berries are very important in ceremonial manners. There are many communities who have spent much of July engaged in ceremony and a few have gatherings on the horizon. We hope you all have had the opportunity to reengage your connection to the outdoors as well!
Our team members have been hitting the road and engaging in meetings with our tribal communities on a number of topics. One topic has been the updates to the Montana Indian Language Program grant through the House Bill 287. The updates are currently open for public comment. We have also been continuing to engage with language and culture leaders from each community as they expand their programs and resources. We will also be reaching out to districts regarding the Indian Language Immersion Program grant this month.
In addition, we have been assisting with the updates to a variety of standards including World Languages, Math and English Language Learner. We have also been assisting with the coordination of our indigenous language and culture experts in these processes. The various standards will be on their way to review teams soon.
Our youth specialist will be reconvening the RISE youth group soon and our team will be planning on visiting various schools and districts soon with the hope of youth engagement, language and culture support and other engagement methods or practices for the classroom and beyond.
