Oki,
Our team has been riding the positive energy from our Tribal Nation Education Summit and Youth Leadership Conference. Great relationships have been made and improved. As we move forward, please contact us on any suggestions or questions when working in our tribal schools and communities. Moving into May, we are on teh road working with our district in youth leadership, language, and tribal voice inclusion. We have a strong Student Achievement duo in Crystal Hickman and Morgan Murakami! They are working hard to develop a new path forward in the support of our American Indian Students as we assist where we can in making them successful in their choices and educational journey.
Youth Leadership
Our commitment to Student Voice and support has moved to new levels since our conference. The youth have spoken and they want more involvement in decisions affecting them, more relevance in the skills they are learning, and more inclusion of local resources and knowledge keepers. Check out the survey results below.

Tribal Student Achievement
During the month of April, we welcomed a second Tribal Student Achievement Specialist to the team. Crystal Hickman recently transitioned from the School Mental Health Support Services Coordinator to join Morgan (Smith) Murakami, and they will be collaborating on all matters related to Tribal Student Achievement. This month Tribal Student Achievement staff participated in hosting the Tribal Student Achievement, Relations and Resiliency Unit’s inaugural Tribal Nation Educational Summit & Youth Leadership Conference in Billings. The summit was an important step for tribal student achievement in Montana as youth, educators, knowledge keepers, and tribal leaders convened to have important conversations. Later in the month, Morgan Murkami presented at the IEFA Best Practices Virtual Conference, the Comprehensive Schools Regional Summit, and for library media students at Montana State University. Both Crystal and Morgan continue their ongoing work in the areas of restorative practices, resiliency, strength-based approaches to data collection, Indigenous pedagogies, and supporting our tribal youth across the state. Please feel free to reach out to Crystal or Morgan if we can support your work in any way. Morgan- morgan.smith@mt.gov Crystal- crystal.hickman@mt.gov
