Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers Competition Announcement
Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) receives funding that is sub-granted to local communities through a competitive process to run out-of-school time programs before school, after school, and during summer months. These programs serve participating students in targeted schools in the areas of academic support, enrichment activities such as music and art, health and wellness, technology and career development, and prevention and social skill development while engaging families in this learning process.
The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center’s, Title IV Part B, grant competition is anticipated to open in December 2022. In preparation for the competition, Program Manager Michelle Cusey will be holding public meetings to discuss the eligibility of applicants and the intent to apply information.
Each meeting will start at 4 pm with a brief overview of the grant and a time for questions and answers. The schedule for the meetings is as follows:

Coordinating the 2023 YRBS is underway at the Office of Public Instruction. The registration packets will be mailed soon to district superintendents for this biennial survey administered by the OPI through a cooperative agreement with the CDC. It is the only school-based survey where students confidentially self-report unintentional injuries and violence (including suicide ideation and mental health status), tobacco use (including electronic vapor products), alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, nutrition and dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. If you did not receive a registration packet, need a registration form, or have questions about the YRBS, don't hesitate to contact our new YRBS coordinator Genie Zeeck at Genie.Zeeck@mt.gov or 406-444-3178. To view your school-specific results from past years' YRBS, visit the Montana YRBS website.

The 2022 Montana School Health Profiles (Profiles) data are being aggregated, and the results will be available soon on the School Health Profiles website. This biennial survey has been completed by Montana school principals and health education teachers since 1994. The cooperative agreement between OPI and the CDC provides the system which assesses school health policies, practices, and health education implementation.
If you have any questions regarding the Profiles, Health Enhancement, or as previously mentioned, the YRBS, don't hesitate to contact our new Health Enhancement Program Specialist, Genie Zeeck at genie.zeeck@mt.gov or 406-444-3178.
