Industry Partners with MSU-Northern to Train Industrial Technology Teachers

by Jim Potter June 28, 2022
This summer MSU-Northern administered the second summer session of a three-year program to help meet the growing need for industrial technology teachers in Montana. This program helps teachers who are currently teaching under a temporary teaching license to get the courses they need to become licensed with the appropriate endorsement.
Last summer, teachers learned the fundamentals of electrical and welding. During the academic year, they completed courses in technical drafting and principles of career and technical education. This summer they enjoyed classes in basic rigging, carpentry, and machining. In the third and final year in the rotation, teachers will focus on the introduction to CAD, engine repair, CAD/CAM applications, industry foundations, and methods of teaching CTE.
Bill Ryan, the Education Coordinator for Dick Anderson Construction, taught this week’s carpentry classes. “We are trying to build our own education system from the ground up from laborer, to apprentices, to project engineer, and project manager,” said Ryan. “Most college graduates would come into our company on the administrative side of things. They will often start out as project engineers and start to learn the ropes in scheduling and project planning in terms of the site layout. They will also do a lot of estimating and working in tandem with the project manager and the superintendents who run the job,” said Ryan...

The Sun, The Sand, and The Sea of Red Blazers
San Diego is known for a multitude of things like the beautiful beaches that stretch for 70 miles along San Diego, the zoo that houses species from all over the world, and their dazzling array of world-class family attractions. For the days of June 29 - July 3 however, San Diego was known for the sea of red blazers that scattered the Gaslamp District and the San Diego Convention Center. 7,000+ people from across the U.S. joined together to celebrate Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Montana had 117 people attend.

Montana Apprenticeship Program Growing; Schools Helping Participants
By: Jonathon Ambarian Posted at 8:10 AM, Aug 17, 2022, and last updated 8:11 AM, Aug 17, 2022
HELENA - Leaders across Montana have talked about the need to get more people involved in the skilled trades.
For Zach Allen, a program at Capital High School gave him a step up toward a career in the trades.
“I just always liked working with my hands,” he said.
Allen says he wasn’t that interested in a four-year college, and Capital’s industrial technology classes showed him there was a path forward to a career in another kind of work.
After graduating, he tried a plumbing job, then came on with Green Source Electric, headquartered in Townsend.
“Once I started doing electrical, it was something that really sparked my interest,” he said.
Allen is now a registered apprentice — about 18 months into a four-year program that combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training under an employer’s supervision...
