Summer Celebrations
Summer Institute is upon us and we hope you attend a few of our presentations centered on tribal support systems, youth mental health, and elder and cultural sharing. For the first time ever, we will host an Elder and Cultural Wisdom Council panel with Youth! Titled, "Youth want to run, Elders know the Path." This is important as we emphasize self-identity and rooted connections and model the possibilities of this inclusion in the school system.
We recently received a grant from the Montana Healthcare Foundation to help develop a consultation team of cultural knowers to guide our work. Very exciting to work together and get various perspectives and knowledge included in the efforts of youth education.
RISE
Students the participated this year in RISE will be in attendance at the Summer Institute in Bozeman. Educating teachers and staff on developing youth voice in the school as well as taking in lessons from Elders Wisdom keepers. It will be an amazing panel and discussion emphasizing the importance of utilizing our Cultural Knowers.
Language and Culture
Our team is working to close out the MILP initiatives from the Department of Commerce and support the efforts in the field. Coming together in collaboration and support is the goal as we work to build relationships and communication channels.
Amba Daya everyone! As the Summer Solstice approaches, it is a time that is set aside by many tribes for cultural activities celebrating life. Like many gatherings, the past few years have had an effect on our traditional gatherings, and we hope that this year we can safely meet again. We hope that you take some time to enjoy one or more of these activities happening near you. Also, we encourage everyone to enjoy our great outdoors and think about what it is you love about the outdoors that you can share with your students when they return. Helping our next generation get the immersion into land/place-based knowledge can help activate their sense of community as well as self-sustainability.
We would like to shout out the Salish Kootenai College for hosting an Early Childhood Education Summit! We would also like to shout out to the Crow tribe for the recent completion/update of their dictionary and language summit this June! Also, Blackfeet Community College hosted a great indigenous education summit, Gifts of Scarface, with many great knowledge keepers! We anticipate a great Summer Institute at Bozeman and look forward to adding to the plenitude of resources for our educators going into the Fall.
