Summer FCS Institute Addresses Real-World Classroom Experiences
June 13-16, thirty-eight Family and Consumer Sciences teachers and pre-teachers met in Bozeman to learn how to address real-world issues in the FCS classroom. The event began with a conversation about Montana FCS and how we can meet the needs of our students especially as we enter this post-COVID era. A panel of FCS leaders addressed how our discipline’s body of knowledge is the foundation of this work, and this was expanded with speakers from MSU and MT classrooms for the remainder of the institute.
One highlight was embracing how to integrate FCCLA, FCS’s career and technical student organization within the classroom to build student leadership, engagement, and application of FCS technical skills in community and work settings. Another was hearing from Mariah Gladstone of https://www.indigikitchen.com/ who challenged the attendees to expand food labs centered on indigenous foods in meal planning and nutrition discussions.
A face-to-face tour of the Bozeman business RSVP/The Farmer’s Daughters, a recently renovated motel and breakfast/lunch establishment allowed attendees to learn about being “different” within the hospitality and food industry. Other networking activities took place to build connections and encourage professional mentoring.
A big thank you to the MSU Department of Human Development and Family Sciences: FCS Education for hosting this event.

“I’ve been waiting for this today for a long time,” said Bison sophomore Houston Waddell. “My class built one of 'em and a different class built the other one. We all worked together and it was just a good learning experience for all of us..."
