GFHS senior selected as 'Woman of Tomorrow' by YWCA
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Every year the YWCA of Great Falls honors women in the community with their annual 'Salute to Women' award, and in those recipients, they always honor one young girl with the 'Young Woman of Tomorrow' award.
This year, it goes to Great Falls High School Senior, Macie Vinaras.
She's not afraid to get her hands dirty as she gets under the hood for her automotive classes, but on top of that she's also empowering other young girls to pursue their dreams in the skilled trade workforce.
"She loves to weld; she loves to work on cars. There's not a lot of women in the skills trades, so that is extremely important in itself. But another thing that sets Macie apart is her entire persona. She has a heart for helping other people," said Mary Heller, state director for SkillsUSA Montana...
Find Your Passion: CTE Family and Consumer Science
While recognizing that all students need to be competent in core subjects, Red Lodge High School has introduced Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways in addition to the traditional academic pathway to a four-year college. Students have the opportunity to earn honors in the CTE program that are equal in rigor and accomplishment to commencement honors. RLHS customizes the CTE program pathways with classes and internships that support students’ interests and goals. The Red Lodge business community has been very supportive of CTE and has supplied internships at businesses as varied as restaurants, veterinary offices, and law firms.
Red Lodge High School is one of only sixteen schools in Montana that offers the National Restaurant Association’s ProStart program. From culinary techniques to management skills, ProStart’s industry-driven curriculum provides real-life experience opportunities and builds practical skills and a foundation that will last a lifetime. ProStart offers a nationally recognized Certificate of Achievement that requires passing two tests, working 400 hours in the field, and becoming proficient in a list of 50 skills that an employer has to verify. Restaurants and post-secondary culinary schools recognize this certification, and some schools will even give credits for it.
Eden Snyder: First to Earn ProStart Certificate of Achievement
Eden Snyder is set to be Red Lodge High School’s first student to earn the National Restaurant Association’s ProStart Certificate of Achievement. Earning the certificate requires passing two tests covering about a dozen chapters each, 400 hours of work experience, and mastering approximately fifty skills. This certificate is nationally recognized in restaurants and by post-secondary schools. RLHS is one of only eighteen schools in Montana offering the ProStart program. Eden is the daughter of Mike Snyder of Cody, Wyoming, and Megan Fox and Leo Cartellieri of Red Lodge.
Eden has gained work experience at Cattail Bakery and Red Lodge Pizza Company. Ms. Jenny Zimmerman, FCS instructor, said that it’s a pleasure to work with students who are as motivated as Eden. For her part, Eden appreciates the opportunity to work hard and achieve honors on her chosen life path and is thankful that Red Lodge High School values the achievements of all its students.
