No Foolin’! April Courses Are in Bloom!
Two new self-paced courses have just blossomed for spring professional development on the Hub:
-
Threat Assessment and Intervention (3 RU’s) - This course will outline trends and information on school violence and prevention, and the effectiveness of school-based threat assessment and intervention teams to increase school safety and support a safe and connected school climate. Great info!
-
Diving Into Computer Science (4 RU’s) - This course has just, in the last month, been revamped and remodeled and is now more engaging and user friendly than ever before! You are going to love it and it's just in time to go with the new Computer Science Standards that were adopted in 2021! Check it out!
Enrollment opens on April 17 for the one facilitated course we have running in May! Mark your calendar:
Spring Things to Give Your PD Bling!
Green grass is popping, trees are leafing, the air smells fresh, and spring has breathed new life into student and educator attitudes, and you are ready to breathe some new life into your teaching strategies as well! Spring into action and start with some of these great self-paced choices:
Sunshine Smiles - A Welcome Pandemic!
Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu! When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too! I walked around the corner, and someone saw me grin. When he smiled, I realized I had passed it on to him. I thought about the smile, and then realized its worth— a single smile like mine, could travel ‘round the earth! So, if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected. Start an epidemic and get the world infected! ~ by Jez Alborough
Helpful Hub Tip of the Month: Renewal Units (RU’s) are what you earn when you complete courses on the Hub and those earned units are printed on your completion certificate that you download to present for licensure renewal if requested. The badge you receive is just your ‘memento’ or ‘sticker’ on your dashboard that you completed the course and is for your personal reference only. Your downloaded/printed certificate is your official RU completion document for licensure.
Spring is April’s way of saying, “Let’s Bloom!”

English Language Arts & Literacy News
Student Spotlight:
Wow! Harlem High School Junior Nellie Rose King recently published a collection of poetry!
Inspired by song lyrics, the emotions hidden in words, and her Native American cultural heritage, Wówapi Wasté Winyan, or Nellie Rose King, offers self-divine, a collection of poems in English and Nakoda that investigate the feeling of the word "divinity." In this collection, poetry becomes a vehicle for realizing the importance of the poet's language and heritage, while simultaneously engaging perspectives that exist between the traditions of poetry and Native American culture.
She began this project in February of 2021 and has followed it through to fruition. Her book, self-divine, is available through Barnes and Noble.

April is National Poetry Month
Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives.
Thanks in part to our National Poetry Month partners and sponsors, each April the Academy is able to offer activities, initiatives, and resources so that anyone can join the celebration:
MATELA call for MFPE Presenters
Montana Association for the Teachers of Language Arts (MATELA) invites you to be a presenter! 2022 Educator Conference will be a hybrid conference offering virtual and in-person sessions.
We are looking for presenters to submit Video on Demand (VOD) or present sessions in person. Submit your application to present HERE. You will need to create a new presenter account for the 2022 Educator Conference.
We look forward to seeing you in October!
For questions concerning submitting applications, contact Jami Wood at jwood@mfpe.org.
Suggestions for MATELA Presenters from Donna L. Miller:
To Grow Stronger, Together is the theme of the 2022 MFPE Educators’ Conference at Helena High, Oct. 22-23. It is a stellar way to network, communicate research-based practices, and collect good teaching strategies. We could not achieve any of those purposes without presenters, so I thank you in advance for your willingness to share your time and talent. When you’ve determined which teaching idea you’re ready to share, use this link to submit your proposal.
MATELA and Writing Projects Under the Big Sky (WPUBS) will be collaborating this year under the combined label: MATELA/WPUBS so as to make our workshops easier to find by diverse audiences. We were told that cross-listing is not an option with the software used in programming the conference. Therefore, WPUBS will be a writing strand tucked into the ELA band.
Because we want a strong program and can’t do that without talented presenters like you, please visit the MFPE website to submit your application to present for the 2022 Educators’ Convention and earn $30.00 an hour! Applications to present are due by April 30. And don’t forget to mark a focus audience! MFPE discourages a General designation in favor of something focused like MATELA/WPUBS.
The conference will again be a hybrid event, giving flexibility to those with travel challenges.
