Relations and Culture
- 2021 was a foundational year for our Unit as we emphasized our goal of inclusive Tribal Voice. The process is evolving by way of authentic consultation and connection for the benefit of our Youth. This fall and winter we worked diligently within the OPI to be inclusive of many prominent Tribal and Youth Leaders to share knowledge and wisdom at various state and local initiatives. The results have been admirable, as we do our best to improve communications and understandings between State, Local Educational Agencies and our Tribal Nations through relationships. We will always have our successes and failures in the work, but we will learn and adapt going forward.

We have been in the process of organizing and administering Montana Indian Language and Culture initiatives as we hope to develop a centralized hub of access and support for these vital efforts for improved access for students in our school districts across the state. Matt Bell is the Language and Culture Specialist and has taken this role head on. We are excited to promote and celebrate the language legacy and cultural strength of our Tribal Nations as we begin administration of the Montana Indian Language Program (MILP) after its transfer from the Department of Commerce. The Indian Language Immersion Program (ILIP) is another powerful effort happening in two schools that we hope to expand to other districts across the state. The Class 7 American Indian Language and Culture Specialist certification is also very important to us as we look to update and expand the positive influence of this historical licensure for our state. Matthew Bell is developing relationships and creating an understanding of the great work that has been developed in tribal language efforts over the years with an eye on the future to expand and grow our services and support.

Systems of Care Grant
As our grant closes out in March, we have been very successful in our efforts with our participating school districts to absorb the wrap around facilitators and maintain the positive momentum of the program into the future. For a federal grant to maintain this sustainability once finished, shows the shining example of the trust our team has developed with our communities, families and schools. Our Facilitators are the most effective, caring and loving individuals out there and we are so proud of the work they have done and will continue to do.
We also would like to thank Stephanie Iron Shooter for all her hard work and guidance over the years with the Systems of Care grant. She recently took on another position in the Department of Health and Human Services as the American Indian Health Director. Best of luck to her!
Crystal Hickman has stepped into the American Indian School Wellness Coordinator role with a potential expansion of that position in the works. Crystal has a wealth of knowledge and experience in health systems, wrap around, restorative practice, circles, and trauma informed care. She is excited for her new endeavor and will provide phenomenal work.
