Social Emotional Learning: Building Foundations for Success
As part of the Office of Public Instruction’s HOPE initiative, the OPI, along with its partners from over a dozen schools and organizations, are pleased to announce the launch of a new website and resources dedicated to supporting social emotional learning (SEL) in Montana. The OPI’s Social Emotional Learning website was collaboratively developed by the Montana SEL Workgroup and features the Montana SEL Competencies, and tools and resources for planning and implementing SEL, including guidance on how schools can work with families and caregivers, tribes, and community organizations to develop shared goals and strategies for supporting school-based SEL.
Schools across the state are leveraging social emotional learning (SEL) to support student academic success and wellbeing and create a school climate that promotes learning and positive relationships. Social and emotional skills are associated with improved behavior, lower levels of emotional distress, enhanced wellbeing, improved academic outcomes, and more stable employment. The Montana SEL Workgroup, comprised of representatives from local schools, childhood development experts, and staff from the OPI, will continue to develop tools and resources for Montana schools over the next year. Along with the website, a SEL community of practice is currently available for those interested in strengthening SEL in their schools and classrooms.
