Big Idea #1 - Distance Learning Planning for the Future
We know that schools are thinking about how to make remote learning more meaningful and accessible for students, especially given the ever-changing and fluid nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Montana Digital Learning Academy (MTDA) has created some guidance around distance learning models, including the benefits, drawbacks, and considerations for each step in the continuum. As you look to the 2020-2021 school year, you will likely identify professional learning needs that must be met in order to move along the continuum. Additionally, Montana has been approved for waivers related to the federal definition of professional learning, thus allowing more flexibility to quickly train school leaders and teachers on topics such as effective distance learning techniques. Feel free to use these guidance documents as you plan for the next school year and beyond.
Big Idea #2 - Using Videos to Guide Educator Growth
Many educators are using video conferencing tools to connect with students. This online medium provides a perfect opportunity for self-reflection. The Center for Education Policy Research of Harvard University has developed the “Best Foot Forward: Video Observation Toolkit” to help districts get started with using video for self-reflection, peer collaboration, and coaching.

Common Sense recently started a video series that explores strategies and best practices in distance learning. Hear from educators from across the nation about what they are doing to reach their students during the COVID-19 crisis.
