Elk River Writing Project is pleased to invite written student entries (grades 7-12) for the Montana state level competition of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This year, Montana students will compete only with other Montanans and will be judged by Montana writers for the opportunity to advance to Scholastic’s national competition level.
Winners at the national level earn scholarships and have their work published in an anthology. Additional scholarships, including two specifically for Montana writers, are also awarded. Entry details can be found at artandwriting.org by clicking the "Who We Are" link beneath the gray title on the page, clicking "Affiliates" in the drop-down menu, and then scrolling down to Montana. Deadline for submission is December 12. If you have a question not answered on the site, please contact Tami Haaland at thaaland@msubillings.edu.
Thanksgiving is one of two holidays that have a lot of myths that include American Indians. The associate editor of the Montana Historical Society's Montana The Magazine of Western History has a few great ideas about how to teach about Thanksgiving while busting the myths that surround it. Read the article to learn about her ideas. Visit the Indian Education for All classroom resources section for Montana based lesson plans.
The new Smarter Content Explorer website includes information about what knowledge and skills are essential for college and career readiness. Teachers can use it to support their instruction, plan activities, and understand how our Montana standards relate to Smarter Balanced claims and targets. Additionally, the site provides access to the full breadth of test design and development information, including summative and interim test blueprints that describe the content of the English language arts/literacy and math tests. Educators can access information about how test questions are structured and scored and download accessibility guidelines.
