Anyone who is blind, low-vison, or has a physical or reading disability that makes reading regular print difficult are eligible for this library service.NLS is also planning their own summer reading program and it's open to Montana Talking Books' patrons of all ages. Libraries Partnering with Public Health – Check it out

This is the time of year that we happily welcome the energy of spring. Many of us are busy tidying our homes, clearing out clutter, opening windows, and refreshing our living spaces. Hence it is timely that May is also National Asthma and Allergy Month. More than 100 million people in the United States have asthma and/or allergies. In Montana, 37% of adults with asthma reported having asthma symptoms in the last year. It’s a perfect time to take stock of how our physical environment shapes our health.
Clean, safe housing does more than look good, it reduces asthma triggers, prevents injuries, and eases daily stress. Reducing or removing mold, pests, or clutter supports both respiratory and mental well-being, and neighborhood cleanups can help remove environmental hazards and build community pride. These factors all play a part in determining health.
Perhaps now is a good time for libraries to have a seasonal reminder in-house or on your social media sites that refreshing our surroundings isn’t just a household task; it’s a community investment in healthier lives. You can find useful fact sheets in the Chronic Disease Trunk – currently found within the Health Literacy trunk, or reach out to Margaret Mulllins at the DPHHS.
The Montana State Library provides lifelong learning support to all Montanans through a combination of librarian professional development and training, program development, and meaningful partnerships.
