MSC Quarterly Webinar: The Item Life Cycle - Thursday, April 30 at 12 pm
Learn what happens in the MSC system as items are cataloged, when they go missing from the shelf, or are lost or damaged by patrons, and what to do in terms of catalog clean-up.
Over the course of this session learners should be able to:
- Identify where an item record is in the life cycle, e.g., missing, assumed lost, lost but paid for, lost, etc.
- Discuss how best to handle “problem” items to promote catalog clean-up.
- Review your library’s current system settings for automated catalog clean-up.
A recording will be made available after the session.

Reminder - MSC Spring Meeting on Friday, May 8 from 1-3 pm
The MSC Spring Member Meeting will be on Friday, May 8 from 1-3 pm. The meeting will be held online via Zoom. Meeting materials and the Zoom link are posted to the ASPeN event. Meeting materials include a draft budget with cost share document, and budget memo. Please take the time to review those materials prior to the meeting.
Member meetings are open meetings, and all interested are encouraged to attend. Minimally, one member from your library or district is required to attend. Action items include budget approval.
Library of Things (LOT) Knowledge Base Articles
If your library has received a SpectrUM telescope, Paulette Parpart from Missoula Public Library has created a bib record for you to attach your item to so you can get your telescope in the catalog on day one. We have a KB article to guide you in how to add your item: Cataloging SpectrUM Telescopes in WorkFlows.
We have also been working on other LOT articles. You can find them included in the Cataloging subcategory Non-Traditional Materials. While we are still developing these guidelines, you can find help in Cataloging Library of Things in WorkFlows
Circulation Knowledge Base Articles and New Subcategory
MSC admins have created some new articles along with updating several of the existing knowledge base articles located within the Circulation category. All of these articles have also been added into a new subcategory, Missing & Lost. Please look over these changes and let us know if you have any questions!
Knowledge Base Updates
The State of Montana IT department is working through some new changes to the ServiceNow knowledge Base that all of the MSL utilize. As MSC admins are updating KB articles, you may stumble across some outdated permalinks that direct you to a page which informs you that the article you selected is outdated. If this happens, you'll need to select the link text 'an updated version of this article is available' to the most recent article.
Reminder - System User Checkouts to MISSING after 3 years
Starting in May, MSC staff will start a new monthly automated process that moves any item checked out to a system user for more than 3 years to MISSING. A system user is any user that the library checks out items to for temporary purposes, for example, short-term projects, Storytime, Repair, Cataloging, etc. This change will streamline the number of reports that staff use to identify these items as well as make the system tidier on the backend. Items, unless processed by staff, will then stay in a ‘MISSING’ status for 3 years where afterwards will be moved to DISCARD.
If you have any questions, please open a help desk ticket
