Ever wonder the story behind the many unusual places and names found around the treasure state? Have you been driving on a scenic Montana highway and asked, "Where did that town come from?"
Find the answers to these questions and more with Montana Places Names from Alzada to Zortman, available on the Montana History Portal and in bookstores around the state.
If you choose to access this book through the portal, at zero cost, follow these steps to find your desired landmark or location:
- Go to the collection through the link below
- Scroll down to the "Search within the entire collection" field
- Type in your desired location and click "Search"
- When you get to the next screen, locate the search field that reads "Order by" and change it to "Relevance"
- If the location is in the book (which it likely is), it will appear at the top of the search list.
- Click through and enjoy!

HOW TO WIN!
DEADLINE: Submit your entry by Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
FINALISTS SELECTION: Library staff members will review entries and publish the finalists.
On Friday, May 15, 2026, the finalists’ entries will be posted to a collection on the Portal site and opened for voting.
VOTING: The voting period will run from Friday, May 15 – Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (MST). The winning memes will be the top two entries in each age group with the most “likes” at the time the voting period ends. Voting is open to all.
