Process and Procedure updated for WPL - Drivers are now implementing a two-scan process for each crate. We will continue to monitor the data to ensure accuracy in scanning/delivery times. The last three weeks are looking really great!
Invoice - If you need your monthly bill to be itemized and separated by your library, please put in a ticket and we will track which libraries will need that done monthly.
WPL Billing Instructions: This Knowledge Base Article will have instructions on what is needed for Billing/Making payments moving forward. The MSL Courier Website has also been updated with this information.
** OCTOBER/NOVEMBER INVOICE ** - Montana State Library paid October's invoices! WPL should have the November invoices adjusted this week and we will send it out as soon as we receive it.
**Additional Stops** - The Courier will be able to add more stops! If you are not currently on the Courier but would like to be or interested in joining/starting a sharing group, please take this survey: Courier/Sharing Group Survey. Thank you for those who have taken the survey already. We will start reaching out to libraries who have taken the survey and are currently in a sharing group to start being added in the new year.
Crates - Testing/New Crates Survey: Please take this 5-question survey on crates. If there are questions, Savanna will have answers ready for the next Sharing Groups meeting! We will see if we are ready for ordering or more testing!
Notes to Libraries -
- Note 1: Please do NOT type in the Library and Library address into the portal for locations you are sending, or your own library. Please use the address book! We have an issue with duplicates being made.
- Note 2: If the Courier misses a stop, do NOT throw away the label you made. You will keep that label for the next time they come and do pick up. If you throw them away, Savanna has to manually figure that out and manually remove them from orders with WPL. Also- This will allow us to document missed pick ups more accurately.
- Note 3: If you accidently print a label, but realize you sent it to the wrong location: Please put in a ticket to let us know ASAP- We can delete that order for you!
WPL Contact Info - For questions or small issues please reach out WPL's Billings Dispatch team. Email: billingsdispatch@deliverthewest.com Phone: 406-245-8622
Repeated Issues or Serious Issue - Please make a MSL Ticket here.

Join us for an inspiring presentation with two engineers from NASA, Brent Buffington and Powtawche Valerino, as they share their personal journeys from Montana to careers in space exploration. Learn how their Montana connections helped shaped their paths, hear about the educational pursuits that prepared them for success, and discover the exciting technical work they have performed in mission design, navigation, and guidance across multiple missions at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
During the talk, you’ll virtually travel to some of the most fascinating destinations in our solar system, Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon, and even the Sun, as Brent and Powtawche highlight the groundbreaking missions associated with each of these celestial stops, including Cassini-Huygens, Europa Clipper, Parker Solar Probe, and the Artemis Program.Come ready to explore, imagine, and be inspired by what’s possible when curiosity meets opportunity.
Powtawche Valerino is the Deputy Branch Chief of the Guidance, Navigation, and Mission Analysis Branch at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, where she supports several projects including the Space Launch System and Human Landing System programs. Some of her fondest childhood memories from Montana include hiking the University of Montana’s trail to the “M” and attending the annual Kyiyo Powwow. She went on to spend more than a decade at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, contributing to navigation teams for missions such as Cassini-Huygens, Europa Clipper, and the Parker Solar Probe. Powtawche holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering with a specialization in aero-astronautics from Rice University. She is also a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society.
Brent Buffington was born and raised in Missoula, MT, where he played for the Missoula Mavericks, and was an avid skier and fly fisherman. He holds an B.A. in Physics from the University of Montana, a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado–Boulder, and is the recipient of two NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals over the course of his 20+ years at JPL. Brent served as Mission Design Manager for the Europa Clipper mission, leading the development of its complex gravity-assist trajectory to investigate the habitability of Jupiter’s moon Europa. He was also a member of the Cassini Navigation team where he played a significant role in modifying Cassini’s Prime Mission trajectory and designing both of Cassini’s extended mission trajectories, including Cassini’s Grand Finale orbits. Today he is the Manager of the Mission Design and Navigation Section at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is responsible for providing innovative end-to-end capabilities in mission design, precise ground-based and onboard navigation, planetary body modeling, and astrodynamics software development that enables the efficient exploration of the solar system.
