The Montana Library Certification Program was established to promote continuing education and to recognize librarians and trustees who continue to expand their knowledge and skills to provide improved services for patrons and communities.
Watch this short video: MSL Certification Program Overview
Have you checked your certification track lately? You may be close to submitting your credits for review.
Once your track is submitted, the MSL Continuing Education coordinator reviews your record for any duplicates or errors. If everything looks good, your supervisor is contacted to verify your credits. Once the supervisor verifies the credits, your certificate is issued.
A new track will automatically start, and you will have four years to complete the next certification track.
A Note on Verification
The Board Chair verifies credits for trustees and the library director.
The Director verifies credits for library staff. Larger libraries may have supervisors verify credits for library staff who report to a supervisor other than the director.
We had 107 responses to our recent continuing education survey. We really appreciate hearing from so many!
One of the questions asked about preferences between in-person and online training. The convenience of online options was a clear benefit for so many who would have to travel significant distances to join a workshop or conference. That being said, nearly a third of respondents really like to attend something in person. Comments included the importance of being free of the frequent interruptions that can get in the way of doing training at the library and the value of joining with peers for the extra learning that occurs when we are in the same room.
With that in mind, the Library Federation meetings and continuing education are a reliable and predictable way to get learning and connect with colleagues in one location. Connect with your Federation Coordinator to learn more about upcoming continuing education opportunities.

Connecting with Local Government Officials - Do Public Libraries Help Mitigate Crime?
Wednesday, April 16 @ 11:00 a.m.
Libraries provide physical and digital spaces where community members connect with one another, information, and ideas. The library's role in helping with literacy and success in school has been shared in previous webinars. In this installment of our webinar series, we will explore the idea of whether libraries help with public safety.
Dr. Amir B. Ferreira Neto led a study that examined the relationship between public libraries and crime rates. He and his colleagues were curious about the impact cultural institutions might have on crime rates. During this webinar, he will share how the group conducted their study and their findings.
