We have been excited by the steady stream of new photos coming to the Montana History Portal from University of Montana Mansfield Library. They have made over 8,000 of their images available online with us, and it is an unbelievable resource. We have a fresh batch of images this week, including the 1965 photo below of Forest Service Officer DelMar Jaquish looking toward the Clark Fork River of the Columbia drainage, an undeveloped area in Ninemile Ranger District.
The focus of the recent UM photo uploads has been 20th century Forest Service and forestry related topics. One of the handy things about our History Portal platform is that content can be tagged and categorized by Subject. The UM staff have been exceptionally diligent at this task, and we wanted to share some examples of how you can use Subjects to browse related content on the History Portal. On the right side of every item on our website, you will see a long list of metadata. Subjects is an important piece of metadata list on this right column, and you will see that Subject terms are clickable. If you follow Subject links, it will take you to other items on the site that have the same Subjects. The UM photos are a great example of this, and will allow you to wind your way through all kinds of interesting related items. The best part of this is that it allows interconnectivity between items from different institutions.
Just a few examples of the subjects used through the recent UM photos:
United States. Forest Service -- Employees
Forest fires
Landscape photographs
Ninemile Ranger District (Mont.)
You can see from this small list that the range of topics spans from broad to very specific. We have hundreds of different Subject lists on the site, and we hope you will take advantage of them for some browsing - just be careful not to go down too many rabbit holes and find yourself browsing away an entire afternoon of work!
