The USDA Forest Service is excited to collaborate with public library systems across the country on the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge in celebration of Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday. This program is designed to be a fun and easy way to engage children in reading about wildfire prevention, forests, and natural resource careers, while exploring their local environment.
All public libraries in Montana will be receiving a set of materials to promote and join the Smokey the Bear Reading Challenge. Look for these to arrive in the mail in the next couple of weeks.
- Libraries can run the challenge anytime from January 1st to November 28th, 2024.
- Challenge is geared for ages 4 to 10, but all ages are welcome.
Additional incentive items can be ordered at a low cost through Symbols.gov or at no cost through Natural Inquirer.
You can also access materials like printable certificates, posters, bookmarks, and other items from a Digital Tool-Kit.
