As we prepare to enter the 2023 Legislative Session, Montana State Library needs your stories about how State Aid impacts your library. How did you use your State Aid in FY2022? What impact did it have on your community?
We will most likely need your stories within the first few weeks of session, so we will need them by December 30th at the latest!

The people who use libraries are the best at explaining why libraries matter. Montana State Library staff have created a one question survey designed to capture why people value libraries. We plan on coding survey responses and creating a public facing dashboard that highlights why libraries matter. Library directors, board members, and staff can share with the public, with community leaders, and government officials. The dashboard will be available in January 2023.
We need data to build the dashboard. Please post the following survey link on your website, share it with patrons on social media, or in newsletters. By December 15, 2022, staff from the Montana Shared Catalog will add the survey to the online Enterprise catalog.
Please encourage people to complete the survey. Their stories are powerful and MSL staff hope this dashboard will be useful to library supporters in Montana.

In May 2023, the Montana State Library will be partnering with the Space Science Institute to bring STEM Workshops to both eastern and western Montana. These workshops will focus on STEM programming in libraries in general, but also how to prepare for solar eclipse activities for the 2023 and 2024 eclipse coming up.
The workshops are scheduled for May 15th in western Montana (Helena), and May 17th in eastern Montana (Glendive). The May 15th location has been changed, from Bozeman to Helena. May 17th will still be located in Glendive. For those of you who have filled out the STEM Programming Interest Form back when the location was Bozeman, no need to change or withdraw you form submission. We won't be asking for a final commitment for attendance until early 2023.
For those of you who are interested in attending, please do fill out the form linked above, so that we have some general estimates! We will reach back out in 2023 with more detailed logistics/schedule and see where your interest level is at that point.
As another reminder, if your library is interested in receiving FREE solar eclipse glasses, please make sure to fill out the Solar Eclipse Glasses Registration Form from the Space Science Institute! Glasses are first come, first served, so please fill this out early to make sure you make it on the list.
You can read all about the SEAL (Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries) project that all of this is made possible under at the Space Science Institute's SEAL Project Webpage.

Virginia City Historic Architecture Inventory Collection
Virginia City is an historical, open-air museum within a living community. The Virginia City Historic Architecture Inventory Report, aka the Dames & Moore Report, originally compiled in 1990, and updated in 2022, provides a unique insight into the resource. This comprehensive inventory of almost 300 historic and non-historic properties forms the basis of this collection.

There is a robust professional development collection right at your fingertips!
Library directors and staff in Montana are eligible for a library card from the MSL. This is a pretty big deal because we have merged our Overdrive collection with the Department of Transportation's collection to increase the holdings in both of our agencies!
If you are already using this collection you should know this merge has changed where you go to find the collection on the web. Visit the new landing page for Montana State Agency Libraries to see this fantastic collection!
If you are using the Libby app, you will be logged out and will need to complete the following steps:
- Open the app
- Search for our new library: “Montana State Agency Libraries”
- Enter your Montana State Library card number
- Start reading!
Please contact Marilyn Bennett with any questions or concerns. mbennett@mt.gov(406)444-5352
