Important announcement regarding Hydrography (NHD and WBD) Editing
Editing of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) will soon be ending. USGS announced an end to NHD/WBD editing in order to focus resources on the development of the 3D Hydrography Program (lidar, elevation-derived hydrography).
Upcoming Deadlines:
- USGS NHD Job Checkouts will end December 31, 2022.
- USGS WBD Job Checkouts will end June 30, 2023.
- If you have any pending edits of the NHD or WBD, please contact the State NHD Steward, Troy Blandford, tblandford@mt.gov, as soon as possible. We anticipate needing incoming edits by December 5th in order to compete the edits before lockdown.
Going forward, static versions of the NHD, WBD, and NHDPlusHR will remain available. Static versions are scheduled to be published Sept. 30, 2023.

The Montana State Library follows several communities through the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) that are focused on the NHD, elevation-derived hydrography, and state needs. Please reach out with your questions and concerns and let us know about disruptions that may be caused by cessation of NHD editing.
